Havoc opens it.

We move into the hallway.

A dim light glows near the holding room.

Someone placed a flashlight on the floor.

It points toward Hampton’s cell.

Hampton stands behind the bars.

Arthur Harlan stands outside them.

His pistol is aimed at Hampton’s chest.

Harlan is taller than I expected.

Silver hair.

Dark coat.

No panic.

No fear.

He looks like a man waiting for a meeting to begin.

His gaze moves to me.

“Grant’s little sister.”

I keep my weapon trained on him.

“Deputy Mara Ellis.”

“I know who you are.”

“You’ve been watching me.”

“Vance was watching you.”

“For you.”

Harlan shrugs.

“Robert had difficulty letting go of old assignments.”

“Robert is dead.”

For the first time, Harlan’s expression changes.

Only slightly.

But I see it.

“Did Doc kill him?”

“I did.”
