I sit in the passenger seat with Sheriff Tate’s radio in one hand and my weapon in the other.
Trigger is behind me.
Sheriff Tate follows in his SUV.
Blaze, Ace, and Havoc are less than a minute behind him.
Every second takes me farther from Colin.
Blood covered my hands when I left him.
His blood.
I told him I loved him.
Then I walked away.
Not because I wanted to.
Because Arthur Harlan is heading toward the sheriff’s station.
Toward Grant’s lockbox.
Toward the black key.
Toward the third envelope.
“Doc will be fine,” Wolf says.
I look at him.
“I didn’t say anything.”
“You didn’t have to.”
“He was shot.”
“Grazed.”
“That’s what he said.”
“Doc’s dramatic.”
Trigger leans forward between the seats.
“He was always getting shot.”
I turn toward him.
“How often?”
Wolf gives Trigger a warning look.
Trigger leans back.
“Almost never.”
“That wasn’t convincing.”
