“Mara!”

She jumps into the back of the moving ambulance.

I run after her.

Inside, Mara catches the stretcher before it slams into the doors.

A paramedic grabs the other side.

Wolf swerves across the pasture.

The black pickup misses the ambulance by inches.

Then it strikes the edge of the collapsed cellar.

Metal screams.

Concrete breaks.

The front of the truck drops into the hole.

For one terrible second, nothing happens.

Then flames erupt beneath the hood.

“Fire!” someone shouts.

The gas tank.

The remains.

The evidence.

Twenty-three men who have waited fifteen years to be found.

Trigger, Blaze, Ace, and Havoc rush toward the cellar with extinguishers.

Firefighters drag hoses across the field.

I find Mara beside the ambulance.

She’s checking Carson’s restraints.

I grab her shoulders.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“You jumped into a moving ambulance.”

“Carson’s stretcher was rolling.”

“You could have been hit.”

“So could he.”

“You cannot keep doing this.”
