Mara nods.

“He drew this after Grant died.”

Sheriff Tate looks between us.

“How did Kane get it into Grant’s box?”

“He must have had the box,” I say.

“Vance never did,” Mara adds. “That’s why he needs it now.”

Kane took Grant’s phone from his body.

He may have taken the lockbox too.

The phone ended up in Vance’s cellar.

The box somehow made it back to Grant’s family.

“What if Kane brought it to Eagle River?” Mara asks.

“When?”

“After the bodies were moved.”

“That was ten years ago.”

“Mom was still alive then.”

“Would she have accepted something from Kane?”

“Not if she knew who he was.”

I understand.

“He left it where she would find it.”

Mara nods.

“The box appeared on her back porch. Mom thought the Army had sent it.”

“Did she report it?”

“No. Grant’s initials were on the lid. She put it away with the rest of his things.”

Kane had added the map.

He knew the bodies were beneath McKinley pasture.

He tried to leave a path back to them without exposing himself.

Mara looks at the collapsed floor.

“The map didn’t point to Site Seventeen in Afghanistan.”

“No.”

“It pointed here.”
