Mara turns toward him.
“I’m a deputy. Carson is trapped. This is my investigation, my brother’s evidence, and the property is beside my mother’s house.”
Tate stares at her.
She stares back.
He points toward the door.
“You ride with me.”
Doc steps forward.
“She rides with me.”
“Why?”
“Because she’ll jump out of your SUV before you stop.”
“I would not.”
Everyone looks at her.
Mara sighs.
“I’d wait until he slowed down.”
Tate closes his eyes.
“Fine. She rides with you.”
I guide her toward the door.
“Stop guiding me.”
“I’m not.”
“Your hand is on my back.”
“I like it there.”
She glances at me.
For half a second, the fear in her eyes disappears.
“Fine. But if you push me behind you one more time, I’ll arrest you.”
“For what?”
“Being irritating.”
“I don’t think that’s a crime.”
“In Eagle River, I can make it one.”
Red and blue lights cover McKinley pasture.
Fire trucks, patrol cars, and rescue vehicles line the dirt road.
