It leads somewhere beneath Eagle River.
Sheriff Tate grabs his radio.
“Tell every deputy at the Vance property to pull back.”
Static answers him.
Then a deputy’s frightened voice comes through.
“Sheriff, we’ve got a problem.”
“What happened?”
“The ground collapsed beneath the cellar.”
Tate looks at me.
“Casualties?”
“Deputy Carson fell through. He’s alive, but he’s trapped about twelve feet down.”
A second voice shouts in the background.
Then the deputy speaks again.
“Sheriff…”
“What?”
“We can see metal containers beneath the foundation.”
I grip the edge of the table.
“How many?”
The radio crackles.
“We don’t know.”
The deputy’s voice drops.
“But one of them is open.”
Nobody breathes.
Sheriff Tate presses the radio closer.
“What’s inside?”
The answer comes through the static.
“Human remains.”
