Everyone is gathered around the conference table.
The third envelope remains unopened.
The black key sits beside it.
Sheriff Tate looks at me.
“We need to decide what to do with this.”
“We open it.”
“Kane said not to.”
“Kane also admitted he worked for the Colonel.”
“And Grant addressed it to him.”
I look at the words on the front.
IF WE FAIL.
Below them:
Give this to Daniel Kane.
Doc stands beside me.
“Grant wanted Kane to have it.”
“Grant thought Kane would take it back to Afghanistan.”
“Yes.”
“But Kane never received it.”
“No.”
“So the evidence is still there.”
“If the case hasn’t been found.”
I look at the black key.
“How would Vance get back into Afghanistan?”
Hampton answers from the holding room.
“He wouldn’t.”
We turn.
He stands behind the bars.
“What do you mean?” Tate asks.
“The Colonel moved the evidence.”
Doc walks into the hallway.
