I lift both hands.

“You know Parker wasn't my target.”

Hampton stares at me.
“Why?”
“Because you shot a deputy.”
Mara smiles at me.
I shouldn't notice.
I do.
Hampton mutters something under his breath as Tate puts him into the back of the patrol vehicle.
Trigger leans toward me.
“I think he's offended.”
“He'll recover.”
“Parker did.”
I look at him.
“Too soon?”
“Yes.”
“Probably.”
Wolf walks past us carrying one of the rescued file boxes.
“Definitely.”
For the first time in fifteen years, being around them feels almost normal.
