“The night before the ambush.”

“And then Grant started making copies.”

My chest tightens.
Grant knew.
He knew we were in danger before we entered that valley.
“Why didn't he tell me?”
“He tried.”
I turn.
Hampton's eyes remain on the road.
“He went to your quarters that night. You weren't there.”
“Where was I?”
“Medical tent. One of the Afghan interpreters had a sick child.”

A little boy with pneumonia.
