Every rational thought ceases to exist in my mind as I lose myself in her warmth, completely consumed by her scent, lost to the feel of her delectable body pressed into mine.

Peace.

That's what I feel in this moment with her.

Something I haven't felt in an extremely long time.

It's disconcerting, but I welcome it.

Taking another deep breath, she loosens her hold on me, forcing me to do the same, as she takes a step back, then peers up at me.

Placing her hand on my chest, she smiles, eyes glistening.

"Thank you, Reeve."

"Anytime, Trix."

Rolling her lips, she glances away, breaking the bubble we've been encased in. I clear my throat, scratching at the nape of my neck.

"Let's get you home so you can get some sleep," I say, as I spin on my heel and motion with my arm for her to walk past me.

She does, but her steps falter as we near the doors, and she draws her lower lip between her teeth.

"Actually, I'm meeting a friend at the diner. Is it okay if you drop me off there?"

Following her out to my car, I huff, not happy with the fact she's not going straight home since she obviously needs sleep, but I reluctantly agree, unlocking my car so she can get in.

Chapter Twenty-Two

Trix

Reeve pulls to a stop outside the diner, which thankfully looks empty inside, although I'm not surprised because it wasn't busy last night either.

"Do you want me to stick around until your friend turns up?" he asks, hand on the key, ready to turn off the ignition.

I shake my head, panic shooting through my stomach at his suggestion.

"No, it's okay," I tell him, then grab my bag from the floor. "She'll be here any minute."

The lie tastes like acid on my tongue, because I'm not here to meet anyone.

My plan is to do exactly what I did last night after Emery dropped me home and I called a cab to bring me to the diner. Stay here through the night, then race back to the trailer park in the morning to wait for Reeve to pick me up, giving off the illusion that I'm still staying there.

Although, due to staying awake the night before, drinking cups of coffee and using most of the cash I had on me, I'm unsure I'll be able to do the same tonight.

My eyes are heavy, my limbs are aching, and I'm running on an empty tank, desperately needing sleep.

Opening the door, I climb outside, wrapping my jacket around me to protect my body from the harsh wind.

"See you in the morning," I tell him, gently closing the door. I drag myself over to the diner, each step requiring more effort than usual.

Warmth hits me when I walk inside, along with the smell of coffee and grease.

"Hey, doll," Mabel says in a cheery tone. "Back again so soon?"

Releasing an awkward chuckle, I shrug. "Just needing a coffee fix before I head home."

Creases form between her brows as she watches me, and then she motions to the corner booth I was sitting in last night.
