Then I turn and walk out.
I stop at the truck, then look at the house. Don’t see anyone watching, so I snoop. Looking for the thing I thought I saw Adam stash.
Nothing though.
So I go inside and walk straight to his office. And sure enough, he’s in there. So whatever it was he came home with today, he put it in here.
“What are you doing?”
Adam is crouched down in front of the bottom drawer of an antique filing cabinet. He pushes the drawer in, then stands up before looking at me. “Nothing.”
“Hmm. Nothing, huh? That’s not what McKay told me.”
Adam raises one eyebrow. “He told you?”
“He did. And I’m so happy!” I clap my hands.
“Why are you happy?”
I whirl around to find Maggie right behind me. I blush. Even though I wasn’t involved in the kinky fuckery that just happened in McKay’s workshop. “Nothing.”
Maggie makes a pouty face. “Is this a secret? I hate secrets.”
“It’s not a secret, Mags.”
I look at Adam, just as curious about what he’ll say as Maggie is.
“McKay and I—”
“Adam!”
“What?” He looks at me. “It’s no big deal.” He directs his attention back to Maggie. “McKay and I are going on a short trip.” I breathe a sigh of relief. Adam scowls at me, shooting me a look that says, I’m not fucking crazy. “Just one night. We’ll be back tomorrow. So you’re gonna stay with Donovan and Indie.” He looks at me. “You guys can handle that, right?”
“Handle what?” Donovan has joined the party.
“They’re going on a trip,” Maggie says.
“Where to?”
“It’s not important,” Adam says.
Donovan looks uncomfortable. “Is this a good idea? I mean—”
“You’ll be fine, Donovan,” Adam says. “Indie will protect you.”
I laugh. Hook my arm into Donovan’s. “It’s good actually. We can spend more time together.”
“Can we get pizza again?” Maggie claps.
“No,” McKay says, coming up behind us. “I was gonna make spaghetti and meatballs tonight. But Donovan knows how to make that, don’t you Donovan?”
“I do.” Donovan looks proud of himself.
Then we all look at each other and get quiet.
But it’s a nice quiet.
It’s a very nice quiet.
