The music from the ballroom filters through the stone walls, a gentle waltz that seems to wrap around us like silk. His heartbeat beneath my cheek provides a steady counterpoint to the melody, and for these precious few minutes, I can pretend we're just a man and woman dancing in the moonlight, not heir and servant caught in a web of political intrigue that could destroy us both.

"I wish we could stay like this forever," I whisper against the soft fabric of his jacket, the words escaping before I can help them. The vulnerability in my voice surprises even me—when did I become brave enough to voice such dangerous desires?

"So do I," he murmurs, his arms tightening around me with desperate intensity, as if he could hold back the approaching dawn through sheer force of will, as if our embrace could somehow shield us from the harsh realities waiting beyond these walls.

CAELRIC

Her heartbeat thrums against my chest, quick and steady, matching the frantic rhythm of my own pulse. The moonlight catches the copper highlights in her chestnut hair as we sway together, and I realize that every conversation with Father about duty and responsibility has only made this worse. The more I try to focus on political obligations and family honor, the more she consumes my thoughts.

Even now, with Aurelia sacrificing her future for House Ardyn's stability, with the investigation stalled at every turn, with the growing certainty that we're handing my sister to a man who might be complicit in Lord Aethan's disappearance—all I can think about is the woman in my arms.

"Rosalie..."

I pull back, studying her face in the silver light. Her hazel eyes reflect the floating candles from the ballroom beyond, wide and questioning. Without conscious thought, I cup her cheek, my thumb tracing the delicate line of her jaw.

"Rosalie, I love you."

The words escape before I can help them, hanging like a confession that changes everything. We stop moving entirely, the distant waltz continuing without us as we both seem to hold our breath.

She blinks up at me, her lips parting slightly. "What did you say?"

I cock my head to the side, unable to suppress a small smile despite the magnitude of what I've just admitted. "You heard me, Rosalie."

Her eyes search mine as if looking for some sign that I don't mean it, that this is just another moment of passion that will pass with dawn. When she finds only truth there, her expression softens into something that makes my chest tight.

"I love you, too." The words come out as a whisper, but they hit me with the force of a revelation. "But Caelric..."

"I know." I lean my forehead against hers, breathing in the faint scent of lavender that always clings to her hair. "It's risky."

She laughs, the sound dry and brittle in the quiet room. "It's more than risky. It's dangerous. Especially for someone like you, someone powerful and favored by the King."

"The King values competence over convention."

"Does he? Would he still value your competence if you married a human servant?" Her voice carries no bitterness, just pragmatic honesty that cuts deeper than any accusation. "Would your father still trust your judgment? Would other noble houses still respect House Vaerith's authority?"

"My family likes you."

"As an ally in an investigation, not as your wife." She steps back, though she doesn't pull away entirely. "There's a difference between welcoming me into your home and welcoming me into your bloodline."

"Then we'll make them see—"

"See what? That love conquers all?" Her smile holds genuine warmth despite her words. "You're not naive, Caelric. You know how this world works better than anyone."

I catch her hands, intertwining our fingers. "I know that some things are worth fighting for."

"And some fights destroy everything you're trying to protect." She looks toward the door where the sounds of celebration continue unabated. "Your sister is sacrificing her happiness for duty right now. Could you really ask your entire family to sacrifice their standing for yours?"

The question hits its mark because she's right. Aurelia's engagement represents everything House Vaerith stands for—loyalty, sacrifice, the greater good over personal desire. How can I demand the opposite?

"Don't make any promises," she says softly, her fingers tightening around mine. "Don't swear oaths we both know you might not be able to keep. Just... let us enjoy the time we have, no matter what the future says."

Her words carry the weight of inevitability, the acknowledgment that what we share exists in borrowed moments between duty and reality. "The inevitable future."

"Yes." She rises on her toes to brush her lips against mine, the kiss tasting of moonlight and melancholy. "The inevitable future."

The inevitability that Rosalie will be mine burns through every rational thought. She belongs with me, no matter what lies between us—protocols, prejudices, the entire fucking kingdom. Still kissing her, I grab the tie at the back of her dress.
