The gentle way he speaks my name makes everything worse. There's genuine care there, real affection, and it only drives home how impossible this all is. He cares for me—I can see it in those indigo eyes—but caring and choosing are entirely different things.

His hand rises to cup my cheek, thumb brushing across my skin with the same tenderness that made me forget myself moments ago. "Tell me what you're thinking."

I lean into his touch despite myself, memorizing the warmth of his palm against my face. When he becomes Lord Vaerith, when duty demands he take a wife worthy of his station, this is what I'll remember. These stolen moments in shadowed studies, these brief touches that feel like glimpses of another life entirely.

"I'm just thinking about Aurelia," I lie, the words coming easier than they should. "What she's sacrificing for her family."

His expression softens with understanding, though something flickers in his eyes—a shadow that suggests he knows I'm not telling him everything. But he doesn't press, doesn't demand the truth I can't bear to speak aloud.

"She's remarkable," he agrees quietly. "The way she can see past her own desires to what needs to be done... I've always admired that about her."

The irony cuts deep. He admires his sister's ability to sacrifice personal happiness for duty, never realizing he's describing his own future. When the time comes, he'll make the same choice Aurelia is making now. He'll marry for House Vaerith, not for love.

And I'll become nothing more than a memory of his youth, a secret chapter in his life that no one will ever speak of aloud.

"Wedding negotiations," Aurelia announces the next morning, her violet eyes bright with strategic satisfaction. "The perfect excuse to visit every noble estate in Vhoig without raising an eyebrow."

I settle in my chair, watching as she spreads parchment across the breakfast table with the enthusiasm of a general planning a campaign. The morning light streaming through the windows catches the platinum strands in her hair, and I'm struck again by how easily she's embraced this sacrifice.

"Brilliant," Nikolai agrees, reaching for another piece of toast. "Who's going to question House Vaerith making social calls when we're arranging our sister's marriage?"

Asterion glances up from the ancient pages he's been studying even during breakfast, his eyes sharp with scholarly interest. "I've been thinking about those financial records we discovered. The payments to Ardyn family members weren't just coming from Aethan."

That gets my full attention. I set down my cup with perhaps more force than necessary. "What do you mean?"

"Someone else has been sending money to various Ardyn relatives for years." He turns the ledger toward us, revealing columns of figures written in his meticulous script. "The amounts are smaller than what Aethan provided, but they're consistent. Monthly payments going back decades."

Nikolai leans forward, his emerald eyes narrowing as he studies the numbers. "Anonymous benefactor?"

"Completely anonymous." Asterion's finger traces down the columns. "Every payment comes through intermediaries, false names. Whoever's behind this knows exactly how to hide their tracks."

The implications hit me like frigid water. "Someone's been cultivating influence within House Ardyn long before Aethan disappeared."

"Which means his disappearance might not be random opportunity," Nikolai finishes grimly. "Someone's been planning this for years."

Aurelia taps her quill against the parchment, her expression thoughtful. "If this pattern exists elsewhere..."

"We'll find it." I push back from the table, energy coursing through me at the prospect of finally having a clear direction. "Asterion, can you create a list of which Ardyn relatives received these payments?"

He's already reaching for fresh parchment. "Done. I'll also cross-reference the timing with anything of note."

"Nikolai and I will handle the estate visits," I continue, the plan forming as I speak. "Wedding negotiations require examining family financial stability, after all. Perfectly reasonable to request detailed records."

Nikolai grins, his scarred hands flexing with anticipation. "Amazing how thorough we'll need to be, ensuring Aurelia marries into a financially sound household."

"Exactly." Aurelia's smile holds both warmth and sharp political calculation. "Meanwhile, I'll begin corresponding with Lady Ardyn about engagement arrangements. The more time I spend with their family, the more I'll learn about their internal dynamics."

Asterion looks up from his notes, his scholarly excitement dimmed by growing concern. "I've been trying to trace the source through banking records. Every trail ends in carefully constructed dead ends."

"Forged correspondence," he continues, spreading documents across the table. "False company registrations. Businesses that exist only on paper."

The sophistication chills me. "Whoever's behind this has been building influence networks for decades."

"Look at this," Asterion mutters, his fingers tracing over an enchanted ledger that glows faintly blue at his touch. "These contracts should be impossible to forge. The authenticity enchantments require the original house seal, and magical signatures can't be duplicated."
