Horns. Scales.
“Onyx?” Chills prickled at my nape. My gut told me what was happening, but I was like a deer caught in headlights. Unable to move.
His head snapped toward me, and his ruby eyes blazed like an inferno, the red burning bright… before dimming completely. Only black remained, as though his pupils had consumed the irises.
Black leathery wings sprouted from his back, shedding his robe. The material drifted to the kitchen floor in tatters, leaving his upper torso bare. The mark on his chest was no longer red. It had turned black, just like his eyes.
Though nervous, I couldn’t help but find him beautiful. His demon and dragon sides had merged.
A snarl cut through the air, drawing my attention to Oreo. He crept over from where he’d been curled up beside the table, his ears reared back. Deep blue flickers moved through the ends of his fur and looked electric, as though lightning coursed through his body. His teeth had elongated and sharpened, as had his claws.
Onyx’s attention was unwavering on me as he took a step closer.
Before I could take my next breath, Onyx was in front of me, the air whipping around me at the quickness of his approach. His arms came around my waist before shadows swirled around our legs.
A pounding of steps echoed down the corridor, along with worried shouts from Maddox and Lake. The Fenrir pup bolted toward me and Onyx, another deep snarl tearing from his chest.
But none of them reached us.
The shadows engulfed our bodies before the sounds around me faded. A beat later, we were standing in Onyx’s quarters. The only light came from the moonlight streaming in through the balcony doors. The only sound came from my quickening breaths.
“O-Onyx?” I whimpered.
He stared at me in silence, his face cast in shadow and his eyes pitch black. His wings arched behind him, leathery and soft to the touch, like how I’d imagined dragon wings to be. My sense of wonder died in my chest though, being replaced by a bone-deep chill.
There were no signs of my demon lord. The curse had consumed Onyx. A curse he’d tried so hard to fight but fell victim to anyway.
We both did.
That’s when I realized he was right. Fate really was a cruel mistress, bringing us together only for this moment to happen. The asteroid had reached the planet at last.
Chapter Twenty
A Place for Us
“I’m sorry, Onyx.” I peered into his black eyes as more of my heart chipped away. “I should’ve listened to you.”
With his gaze burning into mine, he grabbed me by the throat and pushed me against the wall. I lifted a trembling hand to his wrist, fear and grief clashing inside my chest.
This is my fault. All because I’d been reckless. Refusing to keep my distance from Onyx because I thought I could make a difference—thought I could use my powers and change things for the better. But I’d only made everything worse, bringing that very curse to fruition.
Onyx bared his teeth and squeezed my neck. Choking me.
A dark mass lunged from the wall beside us, slamming into Onyx and forcing him to loosen his hold. I sucked in a breath before spotting Rowan. He appeared within the swirling shadows and placed himself between me and Onyx.
“Ro,” I rasped.
“Leave, Evan,” he said without taking his eyes off the demon lord. “Maddox and the others should be here any—”
Onyx flicked his hand, and Rowan flew sideways, crashing into the side table. I screamed for him before I was grabbed again and slammed against the wall so hard it knocked the breath from my lungs.
“Mine,” Onyx growled before lowering his face to my neck. His wings curled inward, wrapping around me as he grazed his teeth over my skin, light at first before adding pressure.
And then there was a sharp sting at the base of my throat that made me cry out.
The door burst open and slammed against the wall.
Onyx drew from me, his wings no longer blocking my line of sight. Maddox and Callum had barged into the room, but he didn’t look at them as he moved his hand and sent them flying just as he did to Rowan. His attention was solely on me. It seemed everyone else was invisible lest they became an obstacle in his way.
