“You were magnificent, Kat. I’m just sorry I―”
Kat’s dark blue eyes grew round with confusion. “What?”
Before Luc had a chance to answer, Damien climbed into the craft.
“They’ve both been taken into custody. Are you both okay?” he asked.
“Thanks for grounding the helicopter,” Kat said. “That was a good move.” She shivered.
Damien took off his coat and draped it over Kat’s shoulders.
“Come on, let’s get you both out of here,” he said. “I’m going to give you a hand up, okay, Luc?”
Luc nodded tightly at the euphemism. He wasn’t going anywhere on his own.
Damien picked him up and carried him the few steps to the doorway, where he passed him off to Jens.
Like a sac of potatoes.
“Hey, Luc,” Jens said kindly.
Luc nodded. He didn’t trust himself to say anything. His eyes widened as he saw his wheelchair.
Never thought I’d be so happy to see it.
Kat was beside them before Jens had even finished easing him into the chair.
“How did you find Luc’s―”
“Did Coach Legrand call you?” Luc asked.
Jens nodded.
“My watch has an SOS feature on it,” he explained to Kat. He could feel himself blushing. “A lot of disabled people carry one. I activated it before we left the house, and the system contacted my coach.”
“So Coach Legrand went to your place,” Kat said.
Jens filled in the rest of the blanks. “When he saw your wheelchair out in the show, he called us. We knew Kat was with you, and could think of only one reason the fugitives would have reached out to her specifically, so we came out here as fast as we could.”
“Not that you really needed much help,” Hiro said, coming over to join them.
“We did,” Kat said, running a hand along Bailey’s flank. “Thank you, Bailey, for getting to us just in time.”
Damien joined them.
“We should get to the hospital,” Kat said.
“Are you hurt?” Luc asked worriedly. Kat was looking rather pale.
Kat shook her head. “Not me. You. I think you might have a concussion.”
Luc shrugged, gauging the level of pain. “I don’t want to go to the hospital. I know what to look out for.”
“Yeah, maybe we should―” Damien began.
His gaze locked with Kat’s for a moment.
“It’s okay, Damien,” she said. “I’ll stay with Luc until tomorrow.”
