Torches set into the wall lit by themselves. The chamber beneath the sand revealed itself slowly.
Black stone curved overhead in a perfect dome, carved with symbols pressed deep into the surface, as though each glyph had been chiseled there by force and conviction. The light didn’t reflect off the dome, leaving the room dim but readable.
At the center, a circle of white appeared. Not chalk or paint. Something pale, like bone that had been set into the stone floor.
Sahara stopped walking. Her magic stirred, alert and uneasy. Whatever lived inside the circle was awake.
Ezra felt it too. She could tell by the way his posture adjusted, and by the quiet focus that settled onto the circle. His arm hovered near her without touching, simply reminding her of his continued support.
The pressure inside her head came next. A presence sliding into her thoughts with practiced familiarity, bypassing resistance the way water finds cracks.
“At last,” it whispered.
Sahara’s breath caught, but she stayed upright. Ezra shifted closer, shoulder to shoulder, grounding her without anchoring her down.
That was not the prisoner’s voice. “Who are you?” she asked.
“The guardian. What brings you to my chamber?”
“We’re here to stabilize the prison,” Sahara said, voice steady because she needed it to calm herself. “Nothing more.”
The pressure deepened, curious now. “You came because you can feel it breaking?”
“It already broke,” Sahara confessed. “We have contained it again. Now we need it hidden away for good.”
Ezra spoke evenly. “We came because the place it rose from deserves to endure without tearing the world apart.”
A ripple passed through the circle. Heat shimmered across its surface, distorting the air. Sahara felt it then. Targeted awareness.
The chamber responded to her presence. The glyphs brightened, lines clarifying as though recognizing the person capable of reading them. Translations returned, threaded with memory.
Images spilled into her mind. Sun-blasted stone. A procession beneath a hot sky. Hands raised in invocation. A crown pressed into place. Chains hidden beneath ritual silk. Then darkness. Endless. Furious betrayal.
Sahara swayed. Ezra’s fingers brushed her waist, light and centering. She breathed deeply and calmed herself.
“You feel it,” the voice murmured. “You understand what was taken.”
Sahara clenched her jaw. “Understanding doesn’t mean agreement.”
The shimmer surged closer to the boundary of the circle, pressing outward.
Ezra stayed still. Ready, but restrained.
Sahara stepped toward the circle, stopping at its edge.
“I’m not here to unmake this,” she said. “I’m here to make it hold.”
The chamber vibrated, reacting to her words like a struck chord.
The voice softened, testing. “You could change it. Shape it differently.”
Sahara knelt and placed her palms against the crate. It fell away, leaving only the stone. The prison opened itself to her senses, revealing fractures in the structure. Old magic built with anger and urgency, reinforced with punishment rather than balance.
“It’s been holding on spite,” she murmured. “That’s why it’s failing.”
Ezra crouched beside her, watching the glyphs respond. “What do you need?”
“Trust,” she said immediately. “Just trust.”
