Chapter Twenty-Six

A tappingon his car window had him sitting up with a start, the crisp early morning sun bright on the first day of October. He glanced at his window and saw Savannah standing there in her old UCLH hoodie, her arms crossed over her middle, this time not in defence but from the cold.

Her face looking irritated and confused as he pressed the button to lower the window. “Hey, doc.”

“What the hell are you doing, Mark? It’s seven am!”

He smirked. “Waiting to take you to breakfast.”

“How long have you been out here?”

Deck grabbed the door handle and Savannah stepped back as he exited the car and stood, stretching his arms above his head. He saw her eyes travel over his body and linger where his tee rode up and exposed a patch of skin on his abdomen. Her eyes jumped guiltily to his and he winked, making her blush. Fuck, he’d missed her.

“Well, to answer your question now you’ve finished objectifying my body, Dr Sankey, I went home after I left here, showered and changed, and was back by four am.”

“You’re out of your mind.”

“Perhaps.”

Savannah stalked off, giving him a chance to admire her sexy ass in the tight jeans she loved to wear which fit like a second skin. She turned back and caught him ogling her and he grinned totally unrepentant.

“Get your ass in the house before my neighbours call the cops.”

He jogged to catch up with her and followed her inside, closing her front door and taking in the space he’d missed. They’d spent so little time here, but it was filled with everything that encapsulated the woman he was in love with.

Savannah poured him a coffee and passed it to him.

“Thanks.”

She brushed past him with her own cup on her way to the living room, sinking into her comfy chair and tucking her feet beneath her, all protective poses as she turned to face him, tucking her still wet hair behind her ears.

“So, what did you want to speak to me about? Seems we might as well get this over with now.”

Her cool attitude was a front, but he still hated it because it wasn’t her. She was an optimist, a positive person, not the negative unaffected woman she was showing him.

“I want to apologise for the things I said to you at my house. I was wrong and my words and actions were despicable. I didn’t mean any of it and I’m truly sorry for hurting you.”

He saw her look down at her mug as if she couldn’t meet his eyes and he knew he needed to touch her.

He fell to his knees beside her chair and pried her hand from her mug so he could set it on the table. “Look at me, beautiful.” Her wet eyes moved to him, and a pain tightened across his chest at the sight. “Fuck, doc.” He drew her into his arms and held her tight, lifting her and setting her back down on his lap as he took her chair.

“I’m sorry, I’m just overwrought, that’s all.” She wiped at her tears and tried to climb off his lap, but he held her tight. “Let me go, Mark.” She wriggled and his dick hardened at the feel of her softness against his cock.

“No, I’m never letting you go again. I tried that and it was utter misery.”

He saw a flicker of hope mixed with a hefty dose of trepidation on her pretty face.

“What are you saying?”

“What I should have said weeks ago.” He brought his hands up to cup her face as her hands gripped his wrists. “I love you, Savannah. I’m so fucking in love with you, I can’t breathe without you. I tried so hard to fight it, but you can’t fight fate. You were made for me, and I was made for you. You’re so much smarter than me because you saw it when I was still being a fucking idiot, but I see it now.”

“You love me? But you love your wife. I can never be her and I won’t be her substitute.”

“I’ll always love Susie, but she’s gone. What I feel for you puts my love for Susie in the shade. I would never ask you to be anyone but you because you’re perfect for me. Susie gave me Milo. For that and the time we shared, I’ll always miss and love her but what I feel for you is indescribable. You’re the air I need to breathe. I feel like I’m dying without you. You took a man who’d let all hope of a future go and filled him with life.”

He kissed her nose, leaning his forehead against hers. “I want a life with you. I want to wake up with you in my arms, go to sleep at night with you knowing that whatever happens in our lives it will be okay because I have you. I want us to travel, build a home, have a family. I want it all with you because the thought of anything else is desolate and empty.”

“You want all that with me?”
