Chapter Fifteen

The smell comingfrom downstairs swirled around her as Savannah sat up and pushed the covers back. After the shitty things that had happened the last few days, it seemed crazy that she couldn’t drag the smile from her face. Last night, Mark had fucked her three times before they’d fallen into an exhausted sleep with her wrapped in his arms.

Somehow, something had changed between them. Although no words had been exchanged, she could feel the new closeness between them. As she dressed in blue jeans, a cream shell top, and a longline pale pink cardigan, she could feel the aches from the sex. Without doubt, it had been the hottest night of her life. Part of her felt guilty for feeling so satisfied when her ex-husband was lying in the morgue, but she couldn’t help herself.

Walking down the stairs she found Mark, sitting at her table, drinking a coffee, and reading his iPad. He looked up when she entered the room and smiled as he held out his arm for her. Savannah walked into his embrace, and he pulled her down on his lap.

His eyes instantly dropped to her lips, and she could feel the hunger she felt reflected in him. “Good morning. Did you sleep okay?”

Her arm around his neck, the other hand skimmed his jaw as she brought his lips closer, the stubble of his jaw a reminder of how it had felt between her legs. She wanted to tell him it had been the best sex of her life and she’d slept well knowing he held her, but she knew it would cause him to panic and flee. Mark Decker had secrets and pain in his past that she knew nothing of. She wanted him to trust her enough to tell her, but she knew she couldn’t rush it, so she kept it flirty and fun.

“I would have but some sex-crazed deviant kept waking me up.”

“Sex-crazed deviant, hey?”

His hand stroked over her thigh and came to rest on her rib cage just below her breast. His touch drove her crazy, she felt like an addict wanting her next fix already.

“Um, yes.”

“Well, you’re the doctor, maybe you can prescribe me something for it?”

“I might have an idea.”

She couldn’t stop her lips from skimming his cheek and her teeth tugging on his earlobe.

A loud knock at the door broke the bubble they were in, and she wanted to shout at whoever it was to go away so she could stay here in this haven with just the two of them.

Mark tapped her butt for her to stand. “Duty calls.”

Savannah went to stand but he pulled her in for one last kiss which made her toes curl it held such promise.

“Until later, doc.”

“Later.”

Going to the kettle, she made herself busy making tea, not even questioning why she was letting Mark open her front door.

“Hey, Deck.”

She heard Alex’s voice and turned around to greet him. “Hi, Alex.”

She held the coffee pot up and saw him nod. “God yes please, I feel like I haven’t slept in ten years.”

Savannah grinned. “I take it Clara still isn’t sleeping?”

Alex sat down at her kitchen table and rubbed his hands over his face as she handed him the coffee and he sipped it and sighed in pleasure. “No, colic and it’s horrific. I swear terrorists have nothing on the sight of your child crying for no reason and having no clue how to fix it.”

Decker pursed his lips. “Try white noise. It worked with Milo when he was a baby.”

Savannah stared in shock and Alex looked at him in surprise. “Thanks, Deck. At this point, I’ll try anything. Evelyn is shattered.”

Savannah turned back to the kettle to busy herself, and to stop herself from asking about Milo. Was he the son her friends had mentioned? Did Decker have kids and if so, why had he never mentioned it? A thought struck her, and she prayed she was wrong and that the man she was coming to care for, was falling for, hadn’t suffered the worst kind of agony.

Pasting a bright smile on her face, she turned and brought her tea to the table. “So, Alex, apart from coffee and advice, what brings you over?”

Alex cast a glance at Decker and a message seemed to pass between them. Her heart began to beat faster as she gripped her mug so hard it was a wonder it didn’t crack.

Mark looked at her. “We identified the men who killed Andy.”
