Chapter Twelve

“Lockthe door and don’t let anyone in until I get there. Keep this line free and hold tight. I’m on my way.”

“Okay, hurry.”

Decker paused, taking the time to reassure her even though all he wanted to do was run out the door. A feeling he couldn’t place gripped him hard. “Savannah, it’s going to be okay.”

“Okay.”

Jesus, the fear in her voice almost slayed him. She was one of the calmest people he knew, not prone to dramatics and he was around the coolest of people on a daily basis.

“I’m hanging up so I can arrange back-up.”

“All right.”

Decker hung up the phone, not wanting to kill the connection but needing to concentrate and knowing that listening to the fear in her voice would distract him. She didn’t need that from him, she needed him to keep his head. He ran to the tech room and slammed open the door. Lopez’s eyes came to him in shock.

“Lopez, call Aubrey. There’s a situation at the hospital.” He explained the rest in short succinct sentences as he began to prepare mentally, keeping a rein on the fear that was riding him so he could do what was needed. Lopez got to work calling Aubrey and he ran for the gym where the team were working out. Gunner, Waggs, Reid, Liam, and Mitch stopped dead as he ran in, their eyes falling to him.

“Savannah’s in trouble. Two men just shot her ex at the hospital and now they’re after her.”

As the men sprang into action, all of them heading for the weapons room and gearing up in tactical clothing and grabbing what they might need, Decker checked his phone. He wanted to call her back, but he could tip off the people hunting her. Lopez ran in, handing out comms and followed them to the Husky, a protected patrol vehicle and mobile command centre.

“Aubrey is talking to Percy and locking the hospital down. That means the mortuary is locked down from the rest of the hospital.”

“Tell her we’re not waiting.”

“Already did, she said she’d have it approved, as the nearest armed response is at least fifteen minutes out.”

“Good.” He didn’t care if it was approved or not, he was going. The thought of Savannah in that situation was almost unbearable and if he wasn’t dead, he’d kill her useless ex-husband for dragging her into his shit.

Liam jumped in the driver’s seat as Lopez went back to command central. He’d co-ordinate from there, using all his toys and tools to guide the team. He’d also get in touch with Alex and Blake and let them know, although with Alex out he was the highest-ranking, and this was his call anyway.

“What do we know?” Reid demanded as he clipped his vest tight around his middle.

“Not a lot. Savannah called me five minutes ago and said Andy Farr was dead and she was in trouble. Two men were after her and she was hiding out in the viewing room of the mortuary.”

Gunner tapped an iPad looking device in his hand. “Lopez patched us into the hospital cameras. We have eyes on the front of the Mortuary, but the back is a black zone.”

“Can we get eyes inside?” He needed to see as much as he could before they went into this.

“Negative.”

Liam turned a corner at breakneck speed, and he hung on to the overhead grab hold.

“We go in as two man teams. Mitch, you go with Waggs and cover the back, infill through the fire door and clear the labs.” Decker pointed to the schematics of the mortuary and tapped his earpiece to connect with Lopez. “How old are these blueprints?”

“They were filed with the council two years ago so should be pretty accurate.”

“Good. Reid and Liam, you go in and clear the left side of the building. Gunner and I will take the right.”

The men nodded. This was a drill they’d practised a hundred times, and they could do it in their sleep but suddenly it was different. Someone he cared about was in danger, but he knew he needed to keep a cool head.

The Husky came to a halt outside the lab, and they all jumped out. Aubrey had beat them to it and was cordoning off the area and approached as they exited.

“Sit rep?”

“We still have people inside the building.”
