“Oh, come on, Deck. We both know you don’t do relationships because you’re still hung up on guilt from what happened to your wife and kids.”

“Don’t.”

He spat the word out not wanting to hear any more. They didn’t understand, they couldn’t know, could they? None of them had ever lost the woman they loved or the children who meant everything to them and he prayed like hell they never did.

“Look, Deck, I know I don’t understand and pray to God I never do, but I know about guilt, and it eats you up.”

“This isn’t guilt.”

“Then what is it?”

“I don’t want to talk about it.”

“Fine, then let me say this. Make sure Savannah knows the score. She saved Addie’s life and for that, I’ll always look out for her. She’s a good person and doesn’t deserve to get her heart broken because you aren’t prepared to open yourself up.”

“Are you finished?” Deck felt like his tie was constricting him around his neck the more Lopez spoke, the Windsor knot he tied every morning suddenly feeling like a noose.

Lopez sighed and shook his head in resignation but thankfully dropped it. “Yes, just be careful with her.”

“I would never hurt her on purpose.”

“I know you wouldn’t but that doesn’t mean you won’t.”

“Message received.”

“Right. So we need to locate Farr. That man is trouble. I already have a file started on him and he’s into some shady shit.”

“Can you send me everything you have on him and find out where he is? He got bail this morning and after last night I think it’s prudent to keep an eye out.”

Lopez cocked his head in question. “You think he’s the one leaving messages on her door?”

“Maybe, but I won’t rule anything in or out at this point.”

“Okay, there he is going into his flat a few hours ago. I’ll keep the software running so it pings if he moves.”

“Thanks, Lopez. Can you email the file?”

“Yeah sure. FYI, Addie and Savannah are having a girl’s night involving copious bottles of wine which means messy. I’m chauffeur but if you want to grab a drink later, I can get my mom to babysit Payton.”

Decker didn’t go out with the lads as much as he used to before they all got attached and liked the idea of a night in the pub. “Sounds good. See if the others want to join us, but no interrogating me about my sex life.”

Lopez grinned and held his hands up. “Best behaviour.”

Decker snorted. “Yeah, whatever that is.”

He made his way back to his own office with his mind on Savannah. He wanted to see her, and tomorrow night sounded too far away. Maybe he could find a way to see her later, perhaps offer to pick Addie up as he wouldn’t drink tonight anyway.

An idea formed as he delved deeper into Andy Farr’s past. He didn’t like what he was seeing. The man was on a path of destruction and involved with some very dangerous people and that put Savannah at risk. No, this would not do at all. He needed to make sure Savannah was safe for good.
