Savannah locked eyes with Mark who gave her a small smile of understanding.
“Dr Sankey, it’s Sadie Corner.”
Savannah could hear the worry in the normally unshakeable woman’s voice. “Oh hi, Sadie. What can I do for you?”
“I’m sorry to bother you but I didn’t know who else to call.”
“What’s wrong?” Savannah sat up straighter, her hand moving to her bag and Mark seemed to go on high alert.
“It’s Dr Farr. He’s about to go into surgery and do bleed repair on a nineteen-year-old male who was the victim of a bar fight but he’s….”
Sadie stopped and Savannah was already standing as Mark followed. “Go on?”
“He’s drunk, Dr Sankey. I can smell it on his breath but when we challenged him, he got angry and threw me out of the operating theatre.”
“I’m on my way. Try and stall him.”
Sadie sighed in relief down the phone. “Okay, we’ll try.”
Savannah hung up and looked around for her car in a panic.
“Hey, what’s going on?” Mark grabbed her arm to stop her forward momentum.
“One of the surgeons I work with is about to do surgery and apparently he’s drunk. I have to go and stop him.”
“Jesus fucking Christ.” Mark looked calm but she could see he was angry by the way his jaw went tight. “Here, let me drive you. Your car is blocked in by that van.”
She realised he was right, and some dickhead had blocked her car in, and she was trapped. “Okay, thank you.”
Mark opened her car door and she got in as he moved around and jumped in the driver’s seat.
“Do you know this person?”
Savannah snorted as she typed a text to her boss to meet her at the hospital and that it was urgent. She couldn’t and wouldn’t cover this up. Andy was putting innocents at risk now and his behaviour had to be dealt with. He was a good doctor but right now he was a liability and a danger to those around him.
“Yeah, you could say that.” Mark gave her a sharp glance in question. “It’s my ex-husband.”
“Oh, I see.”
Mark said no more but pushed the accelerator to the floor. At the hospital, he parked close and followed her inside like some bodyguard not willing to leave her side. Savannah had no time to process it as Sadie met her walking down the hall and was in a state of panic.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t stop him.”
Savannah was pulling her jumper over her head and changing into scrubs as she moved toward the scrub room for theatre two. Inside she could see Andy at the head of the table as she shucked her jeans and pulled up her blue work uniform and shoved her feet in crocs. She scrubbed her hands as quickly as she could before she realised Mark was still beside her, but his eyes were on Andy, who was about to cut into the brain of a teenager while intoxicated.
She had to put her fury aside to concentrate on what she needed to do next, but a small part of her was glad Mark was there. He made her feel secure in a way she’d never know she needed before.
