“Absolutely, and I have a friend who’s a contractor if you need some advice on technical or structural stuff.”

“That’s great because I really want to open up the ground floor and make it open plan. It won’t be yet because of finances, but that’s my goal.”

“That’s exactly what I’d do. It would make it feel so much bigger and with family life as it is now, if you have kids you could watch them while you did other stuff, or your husband could, or whatever.”

Clay felt himself digging a hole he couldn’t get out of and stopped.

Hattie was grinning. “You applying for the position?”

“What? No.” Hattie’s eyebrows rose. “I mean yes, maybe, not yet, but maybe.”

Hattie burst out laughing. “I’m messing with you.”

Clay shook his head and buried it in her neck. “You’re an evil woman, Nurse Pollard.”

“Seriously though, I’m glad you like it because I like you a lot and your opinion means a lot to me.”

“I’m glad because you mean a lot to me.” He turned her to face him and moved in until his lips were almost touching hers. “And for the record, when I apply for the job of being your husband, you’ll be in no doubt that I’m doing just that.”

Her mouth formed a cute little O, and he chuckled before dropping a kiss on her lips and pulling away.

“Shall I let Mr. Chester in?”

“Um, yes, please.”

He loved that she was so quick to tease him and that he could surprise her too.

Clay let the dog in, and he ran straight for Hattie, sitting on his haunches behind her as she filled a bowl with food.

They ate a quick lunch before he was called away. Hawk had some news for him on the case. He left Hattie with the promise to call later and missed her the second he was out the door. He was so gone for this woman, and he wouldn’t have it any other way.
