“Should I be jealous, wife?”

Celeste laughed. “Never. There’ll never be another for me but you.” She traced his jaw with her fingers and smothered a yawn.

“Come on, wife, let’s say goodnight and go to bed.”

They said goodnight to everyone, and Zin took the dogs out one more time

Celeste didn’t argue, and as she placed her son in the crib that had somehow appeared in her room and climbed into bed with her new husband, she smiled. Christmas Eve had always been her favourite day and today had cemented that.

“Zin, what did Jack say about the man who attacked you all?”

Zin’s arms tightened around her, and he kissed the back of her neck, making her shiver with pleasure. “The man’s name is Ian Maguire, and he’s been missing for six months. It seems he’s a veteran with severe mental health issues. His family has been searching for him but never thought for one minute he was here in these woods.”

“What will happen to him?”

“He’ll be detained under the mental health act and given some help.”

“So he wasn’t aiming at you and Will per se?”

“No, he just saw us as a threat and tried to eradicate that threat. His daughter is a barrister in London, so she’ll be able to get him some help, I’m sure.”

“It’s sad he’s so ill. I hate that he hurt you and nearly took you from me, but it still makes me sad.”

“You have a big heart, Pixie.”

Celeste yawned her jaw almost cracking as she sighed.

“Sleep, Pixie, while our son does.”

“Love you, Zin.”

“Love you more.”
