I want to claw his gorgeous face off. I want to scream at him to get out. I want to pull him to me and kiss him. I want him to leave and at the same time to never leave me again. I want so many conflicting things there’s only one answer.
“You have to go,” I blurt.
His head moves to the side forcefully as if I slapped him. The muscle in his cheek spasms from how hard he’s grinding his teeth. After a few seconds, he slowly turns his head back to me, his blue eyes icing over but then in a flash, they melt and travel over my face and torso.
“Look at you,” he comes a fraction of an inch closer and I hold my breath. “God, you’re so beautiful, you’re like a goddess. My personal goddess. But, for some reason you’re scared.”
Hell yes, I’m scared. I’m scared that my dream would come true and he will truly be mine. I’m scared that he will continue with this charade of claiming he wants me and go back to the lie he told me. That he loves me. I’m scared that I will be foolish enough to believe him. I’m afraid that he'll walk out of my office and I will lose him forever. Even though I thought I lost him, the glimmer of hope that I could exist in this world and be truly his.The idea has already started to put roots in my heart, and that’s too dangerous. I thought I would die the moment I left his office all those months ago. I wished for it. Somehow, I managed to pull through. But if this is true. If he really is a free man and I give myself to him, when he loses interest in me, I won’t survive it. I know that for a fact.
“You have to go,” I pant.
“I’ll go,” he leans in and softly kisses my neck.
I shut my eyes from the sheer glory of having his lips on me again. The beauty that courses through my body, the life he transfers in me. It's the starting point, the tiny flesh where his lips press against my skin. Too soon he pulls away and starts for the door.
“But I’ll come back, pretty girl,” it’s almost a threat. He gives me a half a smile over his shoulder. “This is not over. You are mine. And you need to accept that and cut loose that boy of yours.”
I wait until he leaves and then I slide down to the floor, my back never leaving the wall that held me up. Touching the spot where he kissed me I take a deep breath. I don’t know what I’m going to do. But one thing, I’m glad for. The fact that he doesn’t know that Luke and I broke up last night. That there’s no one standing in his way. Not that there ever was.
Nick
Boyfriend?
She has a boyfriend?
When she said that word I almost lost my shit and tore the place down. I’ve seen how much she wanted to hurt me when she said it. I know why that is, I even respect it. But that’s about to end. I will do anything I need to do to get her back and she will leave him. No one can touch her. No one can hold her, kiss her, fuck her. No one but me.
She’s mine.
On some level I understand how that happened. She’s far too beautiful to be alone and I can’t blame that boy for wanting her. But, now that’s over. He can’t lay another finger on her. The sight of him kissing her almost made me throw up. The little smirk he gave me when she wasn’t looking had me wanting to rip his head off.
Goddamnit Heather.
I expected a fight, but what I didn’t expect was to go up against someone who had a clean past, who didn’t have a son and an ex-wife. Someone who was her age.
No matter, she's mine.
It’s time that she learned that.
I will do anything to show her how much I love her and I’ll play this little game of hers. Fuck, I’ll even enjoy it. As I pass in front of her assistant's desk, I wink at her stunned expression before turning and walking away.
With the plan already forming in my mind, I mutter, “Game on, pretty girl.” I pull my phone from my pocket and dial the number. “Game on.”
Chapter Seven
Heather
“Morning, Sue,” I greet my assistant the next morning.
I barely slept at all last night. Nick’s words played on a loop in my head and I have to talk myself out of going to him. I finally fell asleep after I pulled up the photo of him with his son.I don’t know how his relationship with Claire looks like now and if he’s deep in a custody battle. If he is, I don’t want to mess that up for him.Besides, I promised myself I would never be with him again. The only problem is, when thinking back to that moment in my office, my biggest regret is that he didn’t kiss me.It’s once again proven that Nick is a dangerous man. Dangerous for me anyway. I’ve never been so weak like I am when it comes to him.
“Morning, boss lady,” Sue stands up from her enormous, white desk. I halt to look better at her face. I can almost count all of her teeth with how broad her smile is.
“What’s up?” The suspicion in my voice only makes her chuckle.
She picks up some papers and hands them to me.
“Todays’ agenda.” She rounds the table and takes my coat and bag, then walks off to hang them. “You have a call with the new client, Mrs. Winston. She wants to know how far you managed to come with the papers needed for the council. Also, she wants your input on the new direction that the board wants to go with.”
