I can’t help but laugh at his playfulness and the way he’s so carefree.
With him, it’s not about showing off his money. Yes, he has it. Yes, he uses it. But nothing about Lane is showy or demeaning.
He isn’t acting this way because he has the power to shut everyone up in the building and save my job. No, he’s doing this because he wants to.
And honestly, I want it too.
So, we make out like teenagers in his chair until my lips are sore and I’m about to come in my pants. Only then do I escape from his grasp.
“Come on,” he says. “I know you were close.”
“That’s the problem,” I say, stepping further back and trying to catch my breath. “I don’t have anything to change into.”
“Staying in it would be so hot,” he says with a grin.
“And uncomfortable.”
He shrugs and wipes his mouth. “Another day.”
I roll my eyes as I make my way to the door. “Whatever you say.”
When I’m at my desk, I log into my computer, go through the newest emails, sort them, and then start going through the reports and printing stuff that needs to go into the files while snacking on my food, since my lunch break was spent with my boss’s dick in my mouth—resulting in me still being hungry. Obviously.
This keeps me busy until the meeting at one, when I gather my stuff. Lane is walking out of his door when I get to my feet. We walk to the conference room together. Everyone else is already seated. The head of the table is left for us—Lane in the chair at the center and me in the chair to the side. Sadie is sitting in the back corner, set up and ready to take the meeting notes. I have my iPad opened to the file with the information Lane may need for the meeting.
We work together perfectly during meetings. If Lane needs something or forgets a piece of information, he looks at me. Most of the time I can give it to him without having to look it up. It’s smooth.
It’s not often he forgets. Lane is always prepared, but I’m here for those rare moments he needs me.
“Thank you, everyone, for being here today,” he begins as he takes his seat. “We have only a few updates to go over today, so the meeting should be relatively quick.”
The meeting is quick, as he said it would be. He never lies or stretches the truth. What he says, you can expect it to be true. He goes over team updates and the new job we’ve taken on since we got all the finalities for it. He goes over the timeline and who is in charge of what. There are a few other updates, like increases in pay for certain departments and 401k matching.
So, it’s not just me he’s generous with. He isn’t using his money to get into my pants, even if that’s the thing that drew me to him from the beginning. Lane is just kind with his money. He’s kind.
And that has me feeling a little sick, because for the first time, I realize I was entirely wrong about this man. Not just a little. Every notion I had about him was false.
Chapter Seventeen
Lane
Everything changes on a random Tuesday morning. Well, it seems random to me, but something about it feels like Tage has been planning it. Or at least thinking about.
After bringing me my coffee, he asks how my night was. He’s never done that before. Never stopped to chat after coffee first thing in the morning. He always leaves to prepare for my day’s rundown. I answer him, of course, telling him about my night but in few words because I’m a little caught off guard. He smiles, nods, then leaves.
When he comes back to give me the rundown, he sits instead of stands.
Another thing he’s never done before. Usually, he wants to get out of here as quickly as possible to get to work. Be away from me, even though he’s been better at being with me—even wanting it. It’s clear he’s keeping boundaries at work, but today… today is different.
He doesn’t rush out after going over my day; he takes his time leaving. Making small talk.
I wonder what he’s up to but can’t quite figure it out. He can’t want a raise or time off. He’d just simply ask or accept it every time I’ve offered. Tage is aware I’ll give him whatever he asks for, so what could have him being so nice? Could it be that he just wants to be?
I keep an extra eye on him all day and realize he doesn’t roll his once.
Finally, after our last meeting of the day, when we’re the only two left in the meeting room and he’s gathering his things to go back to his desk, I ask him.
“Are you coming down with something?”
