Lifting her thumb to the side of her mouth, she nibbles on the nail. “Oh, really? Even on your chest with a tattoo gun?”
I have to stop my eyes from rolling into the back of my head. “If you sit on my lap while you do it, my cock buried inside you, then, yeah, my chest is all yours, baby.”
“Hmm.” Her tongue clicks against her teeth. “Sounds like a date.”
“I’ll put it together,” I tell her, my blinker clicking through the car as I wait for the light to finally turn green. I’m almost there.
Once I’m safely on the next street, I glance at the cameras right as I hear her gasp. She’s not lying down anymore, but standing by her invisible door, her ear pressed flush against the wall.
“What’s going on?” I ask firmly, panic sinking into my chest. “Mona.”
“Shh. I’m listening,” she whispers, shutting me up. “I thought I heard voices.”
I’m less than two miles away, and I don’t want to swipe out of this screen and risk losing sight of her if something’s happening. I gun it, my Porsche immediately reacting to the surge of pressure on my gas pedal.
“I’m coming, baby. I’m almost there,” I assure her, flying through the next intersection, the light thankfully green and no cops in sight.
“Someone’s here.” Her voice is a terrified murmur, her breathing heavy on the phone. “Scratch that. There’s more than one person.”
The shell of my ear is pressed to the door, every nerve in my body standing on end. A chill runs down my spine as I hear a man’s muffled voice.
Oh God, not a man breaking in. That’s the worst-case scenario. I’d much rather it be a ghost.
“What’s going on?” Spooky Boy’s voice floods my other ear, and I nearly jump out of my skin. “Mona.”
“Shh. I’m listening,” I whisper, trying to catch my breath and calm my heart. “I thought I heard voices.”
“I’m coming, baby. I’m almost there.” His voice is protective, wrapping me in an invisible shield.
“Someone’s here,” I murmur, my words sounding unrecognizable between my ragged breaths.
A different deep tone makes me shudder. Great, he‘s not alone. At least I’m in a hidden room that they’re not likely to stumble upon.
“Scratch that. There’s more than one person.”
“Stay quiet and stay where you are. I’m pulling in now.”
The audio shifts, like it disconnects from the Bluetooth and redirects to his phone as I hear his car door slam shut through the phone. Loud rustling noises fill my ear, and I pull my phone away for a few seconds until it wanes.
“Can you hear me?” There’s an odd calmness in his question, but I chalk it up to him trying to keep me at ease. “Mona?”
“I’m here,” I whisper softly, hoping whoever’s on the other side of this wall doesn’t hear me.
“I’m walking up to the front door, coming straight to you.”
Thank God.
It still doesn’t go unnoticed that my savior is my stalker, but I don’t think it ever will. I’m just glad he’s here to save Penelope and me.
Eerie silence echoes through the phone and the house, as the whispers have faded. Maybe they moved back downstairs, whoever the hell they are.
“Did you see them on the cameras?” I murmur, hoping that it’s staff working late or a private event that I didn’t hear about … at eleven o’clock at night.
A moment passes, and he doesn’t say anything.
“Hello?”
Nothing.
