Chapter Three

Sienna would never, ever admit it out loud, but she hated the “Cha Cha Slide.” And the “Cupid Shuffle” for that matter.

There was just something about watching a massive group of people attempt to dance to a song that literally spelled out your next move yet somehow still resulted in half the group getting turned around and going in the wrong direction. However, they were always two of the most popular songs, and just like every other wedding she’d ever attended, at least eighty percent of the guests were on the floor attempting to boogie.

Kellie had been right after all. A little sweet-talking of the bride had resolved the snow situation in the blink of an eye, resulting in getting her down the aisle in record time. Which Sienna assumed curbed the attitude of the jackass best man. Had she known that Caleb Winters was going to be here today, she would have told her sister to go to hell. He was the last person she wanted to deal with.

“Hey hey!” Jonathan “Jolly” Somerset, the island resident good-time guy and tonight’s DJ said, sidling up next to her. He threw his arm around her, giving her the sideways friend hug, and she couldn’t help but laugh.

“Shouldn’t you be manning the equipment or whatever?”

“The ‘Cha Cha Slide’ melts into the ‘Cupid Shuffle,’ which becomes the ‘Macarena,’ which then rolls into ‘Sweet Caroline,’” he told her, taking a pull of the beer in his hand. “It’s a no fail sequence I use so I can make an escape for a potty break and drink.”

“It’s like you have this down to a science.”

“Oh, I do.”

Sienna laughed again. Only Jolly. He was a few years older than she was and one of her older brother’s best friends, so she’d known him her entire life. Hell, Somerset Island was a small enough town that everyone knew everyone. That had been part of the reason she’d wanted to move away from it in the first place.

“I didn’t realize you had taken up DJing.”

“Eh, it’s not a full-time thing. I just fill in whenever your family needs me.”

“Is anything ever a full-time gig for you?” she asked, pretty sure she knew the answer.

“Eh,” he shrugged. “So, how’s life in the big city?”

“Is Savannah really the ‘big city’? It’s not like it’s New York.”

“Bigger than Somerset.”

Sienna nodded. Man had a point.

“Better question—are you aware that the best man has not stopped staring at you all night?”

Throwing a glance over her shoulder, Sienna groaned. Looking wasn’t required to know that Jolly was telling the truth. She’d felt the daggers he was shooting at her with his eyes all night. From the moment he’d looked up after his run-in with Kurt, it was like he’d been trying to reduce her to dust with just his gaze.

“We…we have a history.”

“A history, huh?” Jolly waggled his eyebrows. “You tap that?”

“No!” she exclaimed, hoping that her enthusiastic answer didn’t betray her lie. Because she had definitely tapped that. No, more than tapped that. That night had been something else entirely. That night was the standard that she’d made all others measure up to for the last two years. Spoiler alert—none of them ever came close. “He’s a doctor on my route. In fact, he’s the one doctor who won’t talk to me. There are seven doctors in the practice, all of whom welcome me with open arms when I visit, except him. He refuses to meet with me. Closest he’s come to talking to me is opening the door to show me the way out.”

“Well, don’t look now, but Dr. Cold Shoulder is headed this way.”

Sienna whipped around, just in time to see Caleb stalking toward her. His eyes were trained on her, like some heat-seeking missile, his gaze more determined with each step. As much as she wanted to turn and run, her feet were cemented in place. A weird pull to him kept her right there, despite the ice filling her veins at the thought of having to deal with him. The only reason he would be seeking her out was if something was wrong. Yes, it was her job to make sure everything went smoothly—and so far it had. A well-oiled machine, just like Kellie had promised. But if there was something amiss, and if Caleb was the one about to tell her about it, Sienna was pretty sure she might just die.

He’d already done a perfectly fine job at making her feel like she was the smallest person on earth two years ago. She didn’t need him to do it again now. Especially not at her family’s establishment.

“Jolly,” she said, glancing to her left where her childhood friend had been standing, only to find that he’d abandoned her.

Shit, shit, shit…

“Sienna,” Caleb’s deep voice called. The gruff sound was like music to her ears, reminding her body just how good it had sounded whispering all those dirty things to her that night.

“Dr. Winters,” she returned. “Is there a problem?”

“No problem.”
