With his words, he heard her cry out, softly gasping and whimpering. He wished he was there to see her fall apart, and not just hear it. Wished it really had been his hand that had brought that kind of pleasure to her. Next time, he thought. A few more furious strokes and he grunted out his own orgasm.

Silence filled the air and the two of them listened to each other’s heavy breathing as they came down from their climaxes. If this is what phone sex was like with Evie, Drake couldn’t imagine how powerful actual sex would be.

“Drake?” Evie said, just above a whisper.

“Yeah, beautiful?”

“Did you just…?”

“I sure did, baby.”

“Oh…I…I gotta go…” she said hurriedly, just before disconnecting the call.

Drake pulled the phone away from his ear and looked at the screen again, which had returned to their texts from earlier. Maybe it was the post-orgasmic high, but right then Drake knew that he needed to do whatever it took to keep Evie in his life. And he knew just what to do.

He couldn’t wait to surprise her on Monday.

Evie welcomed the Monday morning routine with an odd sense of joy. She was so thankful for the distraction that it brought that it almost allowed her to forget her embarrassment over her behavior Friday night.

Almost.

Her thoughts had been consumed all weekend by how she couldn’t believe she’d done that. With Drake Harkins. Multiple times over the weekend she considered texting him and apologizing, but she wasn’t exactly sure what she would have said. I’m sorry I lost control of myself and told you about how I want you to touch me? She didn’t need him thinking she was any more of a loser than he probably already did.

But now, in the safety of her classroom, she could focus on her students and the day ahead. On top of her fourth period class having a quiz on the first couple of chapters of Pride and Prejudice, she had let her principal talk her into joining him for lunch to welcome the new physical education teacher. Apparently, since she had been the last new-to-teaching member of the faculty, she was the best person to help this new hire adjust to life on this side of high school. While part of her thought it was a little strange, she’d been granted the same kind of welcome when she started, even if the person who welcomed her had been Craig Lloyd, the previous physical education teacher. He was a balding middle-aged man who gave her the heebie-jeebies and had recently been let go for inappropriate conduct with a student. But who was she to break with tradition? Plus, it was the perfect distraction from Drake.

There was a quick knock on her door shortly after the last student had left after finishing his exam. Evie looked up to see Principal Goode standing in the doorway.

“Principal Goode, hi,” Evie said putting the test she was reading over into a pile as her boss walked over to her desk.

“Miss Staab, thank you so much for giving up your lunch hour! I unfortunately had something come up, so I can’t join you today, but I want to introduce you to Mr. Drake Harkins, our new physical education teacher and baseball coach.”

Evie looked over Principal Goode’s shoulder as she stood from her desk to find Drake leaning against the doorjamb of her classroom, a messenger bag slung over his shoulder, like he was James Dean or something. All tall, dark, and perfect.

“Baseball coach?” she asked, her brain still trying to register what was going on.

“Yes, Mr. Harkins has spent the last five years playing in the minor leagues and only recently got his teaching certificate after an injury forced him to retire,” Principal Goode answered.

“Miss Staab and I actually know each other, sir. We went to college together,” Drake said, pushing up from the doorjamb and walking inside.

“Oh good, then I’ll leave you two to catch up!” he said, not wasting any time in heading back toward his office.

“Drake,” Evie said, shaking her head. “What are you doing here?”

“You heard the man—I’m the new baseball coach.”

“But, why? How?”

Drake shrugged his left shoulder slightly before answering. “I needed a job.”

He took a step toward her and saw her flinch slightly.

“Evie, am I making you nervous?”

“No, w…w…why would you think that?” she stammered. Shit, real cool, Evie, real cool…

“Look, we’re supposed to have lunch. So why don’t we grab some food, and then we can sit and talk, okay?” he asked. It was all Evie could do to nod as he turned to walk out her door toward the cafeteria.
