“Drake,” she said, as he settled into bed and grabbed their book off his nightstand. “What if we didn’t read tonight?”
“Um, okay. Are you too tired?”
“No, I was just thinking…um…we could maybe do something else.”
“What something else did you have in mind, beautiful?” he asked, giving her a sly, yet questioning look.
“Make love to me, Drake,” she said, the words rushing out faster than she had intended. She had wanted to be smooth and seductive when she asked him for this. So much for that…
“Are you sure?” he asked, pulling her in close.
Her plain and simple nod was all the cue he needed to toss the book back onto the nightstand. His kisses were hard and passionate, but full of longing and respect. His hands were everywhere at once as he quickly undressed them, never letting up on those utterly addictive kisses. He worshipped her with his hands, his mouth, his tongue, all before even reaching for the condoms. Her whole body had come alive as he touched her, and she couldn’t believe that this is what she had been missing in all her previous encounters. When he’d entered her, she felt it in her whole body and never, ever wanted it to end.
“Hi, Miss Staab!” Katie, a student from her eleventh-grade honors lit class, walked over to Evie, interrupting her daydream.
“Hi Katie, Jon,” she replied, acknowledging the young man with her. Jon had been in her sophomore class last year but had another teacher for whatever he was taking this year. He was dressed in his baseball uniform, carrying his bat bag, seemingly on his way to the dugout.
“I didn’t know you like baseball,” Katie remarked.
“She likes the baseball coach,” Jon snickered.
“Pope, quit harassing my girl and get your ass in the dugout!” Drake called, walking over to them.
“See, told you,” Jon muttered to Katie before heeding the words of his coach and walking away.
“Are you guys really a couple?” Katie asked, her eyes getting wide.
“No,” Evie lied, trying to keep herself from blushing. As much as she wanted to shout about her relationship with Drake from the rooftops, one—or both—of them stood to lose their jobs if they were found out. “We’re just old friends from college.”
“But it’s a lot of fun to tease her,” Drake added in, nudging Evie. “It makes her blush!”
Katie smiled, accepting the answer and excusing herself to go find her friends.
“You are gonna get us in trouble!” Evie hissed.
“Eh, don’t worry about it. They’ll forget about my comment in ten minutes. They are much more concerned with the Liz and Bobby breakup.”
“Coach!” one of the players called.
“Coming!” he shouted back. “Food after the game?”
“I have to go home and get ready for the dance tonight. I have a hot date,” she teased.
“Okay, well, promise to save me at least one dance?” he asked, leaning in so only she could hear.
“I promise to save you all the dances,” she whispered in return.
The game went later than expected, and while Evie enjoyed watching Drake coach his guys to a victory in extra innings, it left her a little bit under the gun when it came to prep time for the dance. By the time she’d gotten home, showered, dressed, and done her hair and makeup, it was time for Drake to pick her up. Her tummy grumbled as she opened the door for him, and she hoped that he hadn’t heard the un-ladylike bodily function.
“You look stunning,” Drake said, scanning her up and down. She’d bought the fitted black dress with a sweetheart neckline and cap sleeves a couple of years ago, hoping for a place to wear it. The chance hadn’t presented itself, so it sat in her closet until now. The idea of wearing it for the first time to the homecoming dance with Drake excited her, and she hoped that the smoky eye makeup and French twist she put her hair up into complemented the dress.
“Thanks. You clean up okay yourself,” she said, taking in his suit.
“Ready to dance the night away?”
“Yup!”
Evie grabbed her clutch and looped her arm through Drake’s as he led her to his car. When he opened the passenger side door for her, she saw a fast food bag sitting on the front seat.
