I jumped up and did a happy dance on the blanket, causing Wyatt to burst out in laughter, but I was too happy to be self-conscious. “I knew it! I knew it was a good hand!”

He tossed the cards to the side and stood up, wrapping his arms around my waist and pulling me against his chest. I laughed, happier than I’d been in so long. I felt lighter too. Not from winning the game, but from the last several days of toe-curling sex, great company, and a lot of laughter from the simplest things.

Wyatt slid his hand through my hair, which looked redder in the firelight, before moving it to the nape of my neck, while his other hand held me around the waist. I was so lost in the warmth of his gaze I didn’t even realize right away that he was swaying us, as if we were dancing to a slow song only the two of us could hear.

My chest tightened the longer I stared in his eyes, losing myself in his gaze. “Wyatt,” I whispered, not sure if it was meant to be a plea or a question.

The corner of his mouth tilted up. “Dance with me.”

“There’s no music.”

“Sing for me.”

“What?”

His thumb brushed the lobe of my ear. “You heard me.”

It had been a long time since I’d sung in front of someone without instruments and costumes. I was stripped down to just my voice. I nibbled my lip for a minute before I decided to sing the song I’d started writing over the past week.

“All eyes on me,

I can hardly breathe.

Whispers in my head and every corner of the street

All the things unsaid to people I’ll never meet.

I cry, I plead, I beg,

But only in my head.

Everyone wants to hear what I have to say,

But no one wants to listen to the words.

Like a statue in a museum, I stand tall and frozen

Surrounded by prying eyes, but still all alone.

And then came you

Like a beacon in the darkness

A light who saw through

All the chaos and loneliness

And now all I see is you.

All I see is you.”

His eyes burned into mine as I dropped the final note. “It’s a little rough. It’s a new song I’ve been working on.” I swallowed thickly as he continued to not say anything. I dropped my gaze. “I know it’s not very—”

He tilted my chin up, forcing me to look at him. “I loved it. Every word.” His tone held such sincerity, I had no reason to doubt him.

He leaned forward, pressing his lips against mine in a kiss that was softer, more tender, than any we’d shared before. There was so much care, so much emotion behind it, tears burned my eyes.

He broke the kiss but rested his forehead against mine. “I think I could listen to you sing my grocery list and think it was worthy of a Grammy. You have such a beautiful voice, Brynn.”
