“Are you okay?” she asked.
I just nodded as we climbed the stairs.
She stopped me. “What is it?”
“I guess I’m just a little nervous. I mean, yes, I met your parents last night, but last night kind of feels like a fever dream.”
She laughed. “You’re not wrong. But there’s nothing to be nervous about. I’m sure my parents already love you. They're easy. Make me happy and they’ll love you.”
“Do I?”
“Do you what?”
“Do I make you happy?”
She looked up at me with those dreamy green eyes and brushed the hair from my forehead. “Yes, Micah. You make me very happy.”
She reached up to kiss me just as the door opened.
“Come on you two, get out of the cold.”
I turned to see Robin’s dad in a set of flannel Christmas pajamas.
“Your mother is pulling the cinnamon rolls out of the oven right now. Merry Christmas, Darling,” he said, pulling Robin into a hug. “Merry Christmas to you too Micah,” he said with a handshake.
Once we were in the house the smell of coffee and cinnamon filtered through the air. It was a beautiful home. Cozy in a way I recognized but hadn’t felt in years. Then came Robin’s mother from the kitchen in flannel pajamas that matched her husband's. She pulled Robin into a hug before turning to me. My heart melted in my chest as she pulled me in for a hug as well.
I can’t remember the last time I had a hug from a parent figure. Mine probably stopped somewhere around ten. This was really nice.
After spending a wonderful and peaceful morning with her parents we went to my house so I could pick up a few things. I still had a week of Christmas break, and I planned on spending it all with Robin.

ROBIN
Later that night we were curled up on my couch killing zombies. Well… I was killing zombies, and Micah was following behind me trying not to die.
“Don’t worry, baby. I’ll protect you.”
“My hero,” he said with a chuckle as I launched a grenade at the group of zombies on his tail.
I couldn’t believe I’d come so close to losing him. It had been a long time since I had seriously dated anyone, let alone falling in love with anyone. Yet here we sat on the couch, his brow furrowed as he tried to keep up with me. And there was no denying it. I was in love with him. Absolutely fucking over the moon for him.
He was who I thought he was. I hadn’t been entirely wrong about him. He was the Micah from the band, from the field under the stars, and the one who accepted me as I was. That had never changed.
“Hey Micah, can I ask you something?”
He paused the game and set the remote on the table before turning to me. “Anything.”
“Ariel may have mentioned that you started helping out around Lantern House.”
He nodded as he took my foot in his hand and messaged it.
“Why?” I asked.
“It just seemed like the right thing to do. You weren’t wrong about that place needing help. While I don’t have your hacker Robin Hood skills, and have a middle school teacher’s salary, there was only so much I can do. I can change tires, fix leaky sinks and buy dinner. I really didn’t do that much.”
I was filled with awe as I looked at him. “And you did all that never knowing if I would know and take you back.”
