“I never thought I’d want to get married again, but I can’t imagine my life without him. And he’s so good with Trey.”

I kept my eyes glued on Jack. It was hard to say if I felt that yet for him, but the sex alone made it worth pursuing. That, and Jack had proven time and again that he was sweet on the inside too. Like the time with Nancy’s dog.

Someone had tapped on a glass. “If you proceed to the next room, we’re ready to begin dinner.”

I ended up with Jack on one side of me and Eli’s work colleagues on the other, so not surprisingly my attention was on Jack for most of the evening. Eli and Gareth were across from us, as were Lane and his wife, Raquel. The conversation varied from including the entire table to side discussions throughout the evening.

My heart leapt into my throat when midway through dinner, Jack said, “I have something to tell you.”

I could tell he was nervous, though I hadn’t said anything about it. His leg had been bouncing up and down since we took our seats.

“Okay?”

“Well, it’s two things really.”

Oh.

“I’ve had some conversations with Henry over the last few months and while he hasn’t really said it out loud, I think there’s a good chance he’s, uh…attracted to guys.”

“Oh.”

“I think he might like Trey actually. Or at least, vice versa and he’s dealing with that.”

I knew he was upset after he broke up with his girlfriend, but I hadn’t even seen her. I didn’t think it was that serious. But if it was because of other feelings, then that might have made it harder for him.

“So he talked to you about it?”

Jack nodded. “Are you mad?”

“No, of course not. I’m still processing, honestly.” I grabbed his hand under the table. “I’m glad he had someone to talk to. He hasn’t been as chatty with me since we had the puberty talk. Oh Christ, I didn’t even think to discuss gay sex with him. I talked about condoms and birth control.”

“Well, condoms are still important, especially for those who are inexperienced, and if it makes you feel better, I don’t think he’s at that stage yet. It’s more about feelings and what to do with them,” Jack clarified. “Also, that’s kind of why I made it such a production when I was going on dates. I wanted to show him that a man could date men and be just as happy as anyone else.”

Wow.

“That’s incredibly sweet of you and explains so much,” I said. “I thought you were trying to make me jealous, push me into making a move.”

“I think that was an unintended bonus that perhaps was not so unintended.”

I let go of his hand. “You little shit.”

“Please.” He grabbed it right back–“You’ve loved every second of this”–and pressed my hand against his crotch.

I did my best to ignore his growing erection. “And what’s the second thing?”

“Okay, Jack, just rip the Band-Aid off,” he said to himself, though I could hear it loud and clear. “Henry knows about us. He said as much this morning when he caught me leaving your bedroom.”

Happy Birthday to you!

The room erupted into song as Jack stared at me, waiting for the song to end so he could hear my response. I was glad to have a few extra seconds to formulate my thoughts. It wasn’t Jack’s fault. I was the one inviting him to my bedroom. Of course my thirteen-year-old son figured it out.

“And did he seem okay with it?” I asked. Frankly, I was kind of thrilled I wasn’t going to have to sit him down and tell him.

“He did, but he also said he was going to use it against you at an inopportune moment.”

I chuckled. “That sounds like him.”
