“I have a great memory.” I certainly couldn’t get the memory of Gareth’s arched back out of my head.

“Not sure where he went last night, but I can send a text.”

Everything he made was delicious. I wasn’t sure what he did to the eggs, but I’d have to ask. They were so much fluffier than mine.

“Milk and a whisk.”

“What?” I glanced over, mouth full.

“I see you’re enjoying the eggs. That’s the secret. Add milk, beat with a whisk.”

I swallowed. “Thanks. I’ll have to see what other tips you have for me.”

Gareth coughed, and coughed again.

“Are you okay?”

Oh God, he’s choking.

“I’m fine,” he squeaked out. “Just what you said.”

I had to think about what I said. I felt my ears turn red, then the heat spread to my face. He must’ve meant the word tips.

“That reminds me. Do you know basic first aid and CPR?” Gareth asked me.

“I was a lifeguard in college, but nothing since then.”

“With a kid, you really should take a class.”

“I can do that.”

“Jeez, Dad. Gareth doesn’t even have any kids and he knows CPR.”

What a little shit. “Well, did Gareth get you any Christmas presents?”

“He gave me a shiny Snorlax.”

Great. All my real presents were second to an imaginary phone creature.

Or…Trey appreciated Gareth as much as I did.

Although he had certain qualities that meant more to me.

And my tip.

“What are you doing for New Year’s, Gareth?” I heard Trey ask in the living room.

The house was back to normal. Thankfully, I found a contractor willing to cut his holiday break short to un-disaster that side of the house, and it only took a few days. Of course, I offered three times the price, but that was what convinced him to take it on.

I pretended to load dishes in the dishwasher. I was definitely not trying to hear Gareth’s response.

“Jack is going to New York City with some of his college friends, so I’m not sure. I could see if there’s any room on one of those fireworks cruises, or just stay in and watch it all on TV.”

“I can ask my dad, but you could come over and watch with us.”

I offered a silent ‘thank you’ to my son and the ancient Greek gods of homosexuality.
