“One moment,” Llewelyn tapped at his laptop. The siren cut off mid-whoop and everyone breathed a sigh of relief. “Sam, see if you can connect to the outer security cameras and find out what’s happened.”
Sam moved to a bank of monitors that had been off since they’d arrived. He tapped at a keyboard on a desk beneath and the monitors all blinked to life. Some showed feeds from cameras mounted in the hallways, while others showed scenes from outside the building. Sam scanned the images then pointed to one.
“Here. Looks like a car drove through the fencing.”
“A car?” Llewelyn said. “A civilian car?”
“Yeah,” Sam said. “And an older model, too.”
Demetrius exchanged a look with Oliver.
“Uh oh,” Demetrius said.
“It can’t be,” Oliver said.
“What?” Dave asked, looking between them. “What is it?”
“Is it a Cadillac?” Demetrius asked.
Sam leaned in and squinted. “You know… I think it is.”
“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me,” Cody muttered, eyes still closed. “You found my car?”
Following the breach of the perimeter fence, the group gathered at the monitors while Demetrius retrieved his chair and sat beside Cody once again. He didn’t need to watch the zombies infiltrate the lab. He’d lived through scenes like that before.
“That’s a lot of zombies,” Dave said.
“How many?” Cody called out.
“One hundred and six,” Dave replied.
Cody snorted. “Smart ass.”
“Ask a stupid question…” Dave said.
Cody rolled his head to the side and opened both eyes, fixing Demetrius with a steady look. “Hi.”
Demetrius managed a shaky smile. “Hi yourself.”
“You okay?”
“I should be asking you that question.”
“I’m tired of answering it,” Cody said. He adjusted position and grunted a bit, then lifted his head to look down his body. “Can this table raise up at all? I’m over feeling like an autopsy waiting to happen.”
“Jesus Christ,” Demetrius muttered as a fist of ice cold dread tightened around his stomach. He tried to force himself not to conjure up the mental images of an autopsy being conducted on Cody as he searched for any kind of control panel for the table. A row of buttons along the side near the front allowed him to raise the top of the table so Cody sat up at an angle. He shifted the position of his chair so he was by Cody’s hip, and turned to look up at him. “How’s that?”
Cody reached out and Demetrius took his hand. “A lot better. Thank you.” He gave a squeeze, then managed a tired smile. “Come here often?”
“Unfortunately, yes.”
That got a laugh. “Yeah, me, too.” Cody took a deep breath and slowly let it out. “I’ve avoided looking at the bite. How’s it look?”
Demetrius stood and leaned in over him to inspect the wound. Cody took the opportunity to give his crotch a quick squeeze, startling a shout out of him. The others turned away from the monitors and Sam took a couple of steps toward them.
“What happened?” he asked. “Is he all right?”
Cheeks burning, Demetrius waved a hand in apology. “That was my fault. Sorry. I, um, thought about something we forgot to do. Something important. Back at the work, I mean, the office. All good, though.”
