Sara turned to her husband and, without saying a word, conveyed a whole conversation on the subject. Eric’s mouth turned up in a smile as he reevaluated her. “Well, it really is nice to finally meet you.”

Laney’s mother sat up straighter. “How long have you two known each other? And why am I just hearing about this?” The last was said to her daughter.

Sawyer snickered. Their mother shot him a look that sobered him instantly.

“Well, Mom, Cade and I met when I accidentally got into his car at the bank that day.”

“Actually, it was before that,” Cade reminded her.

She threw him a look similar to the one her mother just gave her brother. The last thing she wanted was him bringing that up to her parents.

Cade cleared his throat. “But that was in passing.”

“We’ve been friends for a couple of weeks.” Laney gave her mother a tight-lipped smile.

Sawyer couldn’t quite hide the snicker at her comment.

“Well, I think this is great news.” Cade’s mother added, “Laura and I were excited to introduce you two tonight.” Laura visibly relaxed at Sara’s statement. Yes, Mom had picked a winner without even knowing him. Miracles never ceased.

When the waiter came around with salads, the conversation turned away from Cade and Laney, thankfully, but Laney struggled to relax. Why? Her dad and Cade were talking about his time in the military. They all seemed to be getting along well. Too well.

Something about the fact she liked Cade’s family and the way he fit with hers scared her. She liked it too much. That shook her confidence. Is this real? What if she gave her heart away to have him crush it like Pete did?

Just the thought of it made her heart hurt.
