Cade scratched his head. “That’s a long list. Everywhere. If I wasn’t stationed there, I was probably there on a mission.”

“Sounds exciting. I haven’t been anywhere, really.” Laney sat across from him.

“The adventure was cool at first, but it’s not as glamourous as people would think.”

As they ate, they talked about her jobs and his military days, or what he could talk about, since some of it was classified. When they finished, he picked up her plate and carried it to the sink for her. “I’d hoped you’d have been waiting for me last night at the police station.”

She shot him a puzzled look. “I’m sorry, the detective told me both of us were clear, and I was free the go. Addison was out in the lobby waiting for me. I didn’t see you, so I assumed you had left already.”

“I’m not going to lie. I wondered if you were blowing me off. I still didn’t have your phone number. But I tracked you down.” He flashed his best grin her way, hoping that was okay.

Laney shook her head, her golden locks swaying across her shoulders. Cade’s gaze followed the hypnotic movement.

“Oh no. Nothing like that. I was so tired when Addison nudged me out the door, I didn’t even think about it. I’m glad you were able to hunt down my number.” She bit her lip. Her gaze moved to the living room and back. “The Twins play tonight. It’s a preseason game. Want to watch?”

“You like baseball?” Wow! Not many women he knew voluntarily watched baseball. His heart thumped louder.

“Sure, who doesn’t?” Laney turned on the television and sat down on the couch. Cade carried their drinks into the living room and joined her.

He liked baseball. Rounding first base. Stealing second base. Sliding into third. And of course, hitting it out of the park… home run. He shifted in his seat. Yup. His little head was doing the thinking tonight.

Cade put a couple of inches of space between himself and Laney and focused on the television. The last thing he needed was for his love of the game to get him into trouble.
