Chapter 16
Laney peeked around Cade. A four-door truck stopped at the side of the road. A dark-haired man about her age stood on the running board with the door open.
“It’s about time you got here. My balls are frozen,” Cade yelled back.
Internally, she screamed BS. She knew for a fact they were just fine.
Cade grabbed her hand and led her toward the truck.
The passenger door opened and Addison’s face popped up above the door. “Laney!”
“Addison?” Laney dropped Cade’s hand. She couldn’t believe her eyes.
Addison darted to her like a mother to a lost child.
“I can’t believe you’re here.” Laney threw her arms around her friend.
“Well, I can’t believe you got in the wrong car. I honked the horn, but it all happened so fast.”
At the time, it felt like slow motion. “But what are you doing here?”
“Nash got your call when we were all at lunch. I wouldn’t let him come without me.”
“She grabbed the keys from my hand and threatened me with bodily harm if I didn’t take her with,” Nash added. Walking up to Cade, he gave him a one-armed hug and a couple of slaps on the back for good measure. “Glad you’re okay, buddy.”
“How do you know Nash? And who do you mean by ‘we were all at lunch?’” Laney’s mind was reeling with questions.
“It’s a long story, but we met last night. They know Sawyer.”
“So I hear.” Sounds like she needed to have a chat with her brother when she got home.
“I don’t think we have time for formal introductions standing out in the open when these two are wanted for bank robbery.” Nash gestured for them to get in.
Laney and Addison climbed in the back, and Cade took the front with Nash.
“Where to?” Nash asked.
“The police,” Addison said.
“Do your parents still have that cabin near here?” Cade spoke over Addison.
“Yeah.” Nash glanced at him out of the corner of his eye while he made a U-turn.
“No. You two need to clear your names, now.” Addison scowled at the guys.
Laney placed a hand on her friend’s knee. “We will. But we need to figure out the best way to do that.”
Addison’s glare pivoted to her friend. “What are you talking about? Do you know he has a record?”
“Yes, and I know it’s not what the news is reporting.”
Addison squinted at her.
Crap. Her friend could always see right through her. Suddenly, Laney found the snowy landscape outside the window extremely fascinating.
Coward. Yeah. Yeah. Addison could read her like a book, which left Laney with only one option… Divert attention.
“So, lunch, huh?”
