“Okay, he came to see me.” Addison tore at the cocktail napkin.

Ah, a tell. Very interesting. “Why wouldn’t he call if he needed you to do some work after hours?”

“This wasn’t work-related.”

“Addison!” Shock filled her voice.

“Shhh. Not so loud.”

The decibel level was off the charts in here. Laney could scream at the top of her lungs and no one would notice, but she leaned in. “Tell me you aren’t sleeping with your boss? Your married boss.”

“No. I’m not. Not yet. He’s getting a divorce, but he hasn’t told his kids yet.”

“Look around. Like you said, the place is packed with men. Sleeping with your boss isn’t the best career move.” Laney had known Addison since elementary school. Yes, she was a flirt and dated a lot, but she didn’t think she’d sleep with a married man.

“We aren’t… sleeping… yet. I’m not stupid.” She took a sip of her drink, then looked Laney in the eyes. “Mark’s already separated. He’s not like Pete.”

For her friend, she hoped not.

A server set two more drinks down in front of them and motioned to the guy at the next table.

Addison nodded her thanks. The guy stood, gestured to the dance floor, and Laney found herself alone at the table again.

Crap. If the prospects were so low that Addison turned to dating her boss, that solidified Laney’s reservations about dating.

Next time Addison came back, Laney was out of here. She picked up her new drink and took a swig.
