″Is everything alright?” Amy stood two feet behind him. He hadn’t even heard her exit the van.
He spun around. “Damn woman, do I need to put a bell on you?”
Her lips hitched up. “Kinky.”
″Only for you.”
Her brow rose. What made him say that? Stupid.
She watched him as if she was decoding something. After a few moments, she blinked and shot him a playful smile. “Maybe later. Is Brie okay?”
Mentally, he thanked her for giving him an out. He wasn’t ready to examine what made him single her out. “She will be.”
CJ opened the door and flagged them in. Once they were inside, he tipped his head and cracked his neck. “Here’s the plan. We will put Adam in protective custody. I need to work up a schedule.”
Amy stepped up. “I’ll take the first shift.”
CJ nodded. “I’ll take the second then I’ll text out a schedule tomorrow.”
″Adam lives in a duplex on Maple Street. Do you plan on outside surveillance, or are you putting an officer on the inside?” Trey didn’t like the idea of Amy being inside with this guy. Not that she couldn’t take care of herself.
″I’m thinking inside. I don’t trust the kid.”
Neither did he. “I can go with Officer Larson. Two is better than one.”
″I can handle it.” Her stare would have augured a hole in his forehead if it could.
He took her arm and leaned closer. His lips brushed her ear. “I’m sure you can—”
″Then let me do my job.” She shook him off. “I’ll go get our boy.”
She threw him a look that could fry an egg as she left the van.
Trey watched her go. Then the door slammed, he looked up to find CJ studying him.
″Do you still think she could be the one behind this corruption?”
″What? No. Her financials are clean and I checked her login and computer activity during the incident in holding. Her time stamps on her emails would make it impossible to be online and in holding at the same time.”
CJ wiped a hand over his mouth to hide his smirk. “If you don’t think she’s crooked, then it must be you don’t know much about strong women.”
Trey’s eyes slid to the side. “I suppose you do.”
″Nope, but I know enough not to challenge their ability.”
″Were you always this wise?” Trey asked.
″Oh hell no. I screwed up plenty. Lorna set me straight. You’ll learn.” He patted Trey’s shoulder and stepped from the van.
Trey might not know a lot about women, but he knew one thing for sure, Amy was strong and righteous, and if she thought Adam had info on her father’s death or her brother’s imprisonment, he was a dead man walking. Because Amy Larson wouldn’t stop until she found the truth.
Chapter 19
Amy stood with her back against the inside wall of Adam’s house. This part of town used to be a nice suburban neighborhood. Now, rundown houses and overgrown yards replaced the once Christmas-card-perfect homes.
Many of the houses were converted into multi-family dwellings or rentals—a few stood empty. Adam’s place was most definitely a rental and his shared wall neighbor was either out for the night or it was empty. She’d bet on vacant by the tipped over, rusted bike on the front porch. It looks as if the place hadn’t been lived in for months.
Adam’s place was a typical bachelor pad, circa 2000 college crash pad.
