She tapped her lip as she mulled over her schedule. She was meeting Candi for lunch before she headed home today. She could do dinner, but did she want to?

If they weren’t in a fake relationship anymore, would dinner be an official date? Their first date. She gulped.

Well hell, they already did the funky monkey, so… “Sure. I could eat.”

He’s head rolled back, and he laughed. “Don’t let me interrupt anything important, like grouting your tub.”

“No, really. I want to go to dinner with you. It’s just…” She scanned for ears before she continued. “That makes it real.”

A sexy-as-sin grin crossed his face. “Yup. See you tonight.”

She watched him stroll out of her cubicle. Correction, the man swaggered. Damn him.

“You’re drooling.” Ryan leaned over her cubicle wall.

Shit. Trey was too sexy for his own good. She turned and discreetly wiped her chin.

“What’s up?”

“Do you have a minute?” He nodded towards the conference room.

“Sure.” Amy followed him inside and closed the door.

“Adam’s agreed to talk. He knows more than he let on the other night. His lawyer took some convincing, but now that we have evidence linking him to a murder, they will work with us.”

“Paulie knows? I’m sure she’ll fire him.” Amy rubbed her pounding temple.

“Well, he’s going in for his shift. It might be our only chance.”

“Will he wear a wire?”

“Even better. We are working to put an op together. We’re keeping a tight-knit group. Swenson, Whittier, Peterson, and Fenley want in.”

Good. That way, they shouldn’t have an information leak. “I’m surprised his lawyer let him work with us. The DA must have come up with an awesome deal. We only had him on possession with the intent to deal, and the print in the car is anything but a locked case. It’s pretty weak at this point.”

“You could say we put the fear of prison in him. Plus, we had to promise police protection until the Gardiners are in custody.”

“That makes sense. When is this going down?”

“Tonight.” He peered out the window into the bullpen.

Her gaze followed his. He didn’t need to speak for her to know what he was thinking. If they get lucky, the dirty officer will tip their hand. They just needed to keep Adam safe at the same time.

It should be simple. Famous last words.

Chapter 18

From a white, utility truck parked a block away from the restaurant, Amy taped the wire to Adam’s chest. The kid’s cocky smirk slid to his face. “You can help me take it off after.”

Smug jerk. If so much wasn’t on the line, she’d throw his ass in a cell and see if five years wiped that shit-eating grin from his face.

″I’d be more worried about getting your hand chopped off if Stephen realizes you’re wearing it than flirting with me. Someone you have no chance with, by the way.”

The color drained from his cheeks.

″Listen. I’ve known the Gardiners my whole life. Act natural and remember what Detective Whittier told you.”

″Keep my eyes open and don’t ask too many questions.” He looked down at the wire on his chest as he fiddled with the Twins hat in his hand. “Then why am I wearing this?”
