Her fist landed on her hip. “What, you're testing me?”
“A pop quiz. One question.”
“Did I pass?” The stubborn set of her chin challenged him. God, he loved it.
He eased closer, as if approaching a dangerous animal. He didn’t see her weapon, but he proceeded with caution. She was still dangerous without it. “If you hadn’t, I couldn’t do this with a clear conscience.”
He snaked a hand up her shoulder and around her neck.
Her hair felt like silk over his arm. A river of soft strands his fingers itched to dive into.
Eyes locked on hers, he moved close, stopping one thin inch from her lips. He waited.
She inhaled and her eyes dropped to his lips.
Anticipation bubbled in his stomach, but he didn’t so much as twitch. It was her move.
It didn’t take long before her fingers traversed the lines of his biceps and gripped his shoulders. When he moved, she met him halfway.
Her soft breath filled him up as they moved from a gentle press of lips to a thorough exploration of mouths.
Tongues danced in a sexy beat only they could hear. He broke the kiss. Air sawed in and out–echoing through the room.
He was wrecked from one kiss. What would happen when they made love? She’d have to call for a bus to resuscitate him.
Her eyelids fluttered a couple of times. She blew out a breath and one side of her lip rose. “If we get to do that, then you can interrogate me all night.”
“I might. But we should eat first. You’ll need your strength.”
He watched the sway of her hips as she strolled past him into the kitchen. Two words floated back to him.
“Promises, promises.”
Could she really do this? Trey wasn’t a one-night hookup. He was her neighbor, and a fellow officer of the law. The fake in this relationship had left the building. And now, she was standing in his apartment ready and willing to do the funky monkey all night long with him and it didn’t scare her one bit.
Okay, that was a lie. She was terrified, but not of the sex, that would be spectacular. She knew that by the way her body sparked to life when he was within a twenty-foot radius of her.
They had an attraction––no doubt. Lust galore, but she felt more. Right in the center of her chest and the fact that it was not located eighteen inches lower scared the ever-lovin’ crap out of her.
Cops don’t date cops. Not if they want long term. She’d seen it happen and watched friends crash and burn. No thank you.
Entranced by the roping of muscle on Trey’s arms, she watched as he flipped the steaks on his countertop grill. A want for more than corn-fed beef filled her mouth with each dance of tendons in his forearms.
Stop looking at his freakin’ arms. She dropped her gaze to the countertop. Different than the one in her apartment. Black flecks covered the tan. Her finger traced the one that looked like a dog.
Her gaze drifted back up to his arm.
Oh, she was screwed.
“Can you grab the plates?” He gestured to the cupboard behind her. His impressive biceps flexed.
Yup, totally screwed. She chuckled to herself. She saw the pun in her internal talk. Amy, breathe. Go with the flow. Go with the flow.
Holy crap, when did she become an affirmation girl?
“Dinner is served.” He waved a hand toward the table with flare.
It smelled delicious. She held back the urge to dig in. With slow movements, she cut a bite-sized piece and slipped it between her lips. The flavor slapped her hard. Yum. The first bite confirmed it. The man had kitchen skills.
