After a morning of security and stripper sites, his search history was screwed. He prayed HR didn’t flag him for porn on his work computer. He closed his browser and rubbed his eyes. Trey was ready to take a break. He patted his belly. Italian sounded perfect.

Amy pulled open the heavy door at Gardiner’s and déjà vu, Trey Fenley sat in a corner booth. This time, alone. She bypassed the hostess with a wave of her hand and beelined it to his table. Slipping into the bench across from him, she looked around then whispered, “what are you doing here?”

“Eating. The lemon chicken and risotto are delicious.”

The server came over. “Can I get you anything to drink?”

“No.”

“Yes.” Trey replied at the same time. “Please bring another menu.”

Amy huffed out a breath. “Fine. A Coke and I don’t need a menu. I’ll have the lasagna.”

He nodded and left.

She turned back to the moron across the table. “Really, why are you here? This isn’t a cop hangout.”

“Yet I’ve seen you here twice in as many weeks.”

“That’s different.” She snagged a breadstick from the basket.

He arched his brow. “Why?”

“I told you about this place.”

“Some. Enlighten me.”

Oh, he knew. She dropped her voice. “Now I know you’re not right in the head, because you aren’t stupid enough to come to a known drug dealer’s restaurant for lunch.”

“Huh, so by your logic, I’m stupid or mentally challenged to come here. What does that make you… a corrupt cop?”

Heat flared through her. “What? No!”

She wanted to hit something but didn’t think it was wise to punch the agent investigating her. Her hands fisted before she forced them to relax.

He sat waiting, measuring her response. The bastard. “Fine, I told you this is where Tommy worked when they arrested him for drugs. The meals he delivered had more than linguine in them. He swears he didn’t know about the drugs.”

He set his fork down and folded his hands in front of him. “But he was a user.”

“Yeah, small time. Pot mostly, but he never dealt.”

He leaned in. “He served his time. Why are you here now?”

Her gaze cut to the left then right before locking with his. “My dad was investigating the Gardiners when he died. August West, the town drunk, high on meth hit him with his truck.”

“You don’t believe it was an accident?”

“No more than you just happen to pick this place for lunch.”

A delivery guy came out of the back room carrying an insulated bag. Trey’s focus jumped from her to him. Full cop mode. It was sexy. She could lie, but why?

“Ah, I’m guessing he’s who you’re here for. Who is he?”

When the guy walked out the door, Trey’s shoulders dropped back to Joe Blow status and his attention reverted back to her. He shrugged.

“Come on. I shared, now it’s your turn. That’s how this works.”

The server dropped off her food, and Trey thanked him. Once they were alone again, he sighed. “He’s Brie’s ex-boyfriend. She suspects he’s dealing drugs.” He forked a piece of chicken.
