He dropped his voice. “Why are you here?”
“Because I was invited. Same as you. What’s the big deal?”
“Are you dating Tommy?”
She shrugged. “I’m trying to get over Adam, and Tommy’s cute. We got talking and he invited me to dinner.”
“Did you tell him I’m BCA?”
“What? No. Is that your malfunction? I don’t normally discuss my older brother when I meet guys.”
“Well, don’t. I’m kinda on an undercover job.”
She rolled her eyes. “Fine, my lips are sealed.” She mimicked zipping her lips.
Amy stuck her head back into the living room. “You two coming?”
“Yes.”
When they all sat around the table, Gail bowed her head and they all followed. The dinner prayer was short. Lifting her head, she smiled and passed the food.
He knew he could trust Brie to keep quiet, but the chill he was getting from Amy could flash freeze the steaks.
“Everything smells delicious.”
She slammed down the dish of potatoes next to him. Everyone jumped.
He leaned to her and whispered, “Are you alright?”
“Just peachy.”
Okkkkay. It was not peachy and he would bet the glares she was shooting Brie had something to do with it. Was she that worried about her brother? Or could it be that she didn’t like his sister? But why?
He dropped his voice. “You don’t need to worry. Brie is a good person.”
She slammed the bread plate and pushed back from the table.
“Excuse us. We need a minute.” She gestured with a head tilt for him to follow. He did.
She stomped down the hall and out to the backyard. He closed the door behind them. “What’s wrong? I talked to Brie. She hasn’t told Tommy about me being an agent.”
“You really think I care about that?” Her hands went to her hair and she took two fistfuls of it. “You’re an idiot.”
He didn’t think he was until now.
She was pissed, and he had no clue why.
“Okay, tell me.”
“Oh, I don’t know. Maybe the fact I’m bringing my fake boyfriend home for dinner and my brother brings your girlfriend, too. No, that shouldn’t piss me off.”
“Girlfriend?” He couldn’t contain the laugh that rolled out of him. He grabbed his stomach and doubled over. “That’s a good one.”
Pain shot to his arm. “Ouch. Why did you hit me?”
Her palms fisted and she sucker punched him again.
He put his hands up. “Stop. What’s going on?”
