Trey made a good buffer. Who knew the man could schmooze with the best of them? Megan blushed at least a half a dozen times from his compliments on her home and cooking. Maybe dinner tonight wouldn’t be that bad.

“Ha,” she huffed. Her mother’s interrogation skills rivaled any seasoned officer. Sure, she picked up a few techniques from Amy’s dad, but mostly it was her Catholic upbringing. Every girl learns to pray the rosary and sniff out a lie at ten paces.

She rounded the corner on Fourth and still had no clue how she would pull this off.

Tires squealed down the block. She whipped her head to see, and her toe stubbed on a chunk of uneven concrete.

“Whoa.” She stumbled. Heart pounding, her arms pinwheeled before regaining her balance. Every muscle in her body tensed.

Her hands on knees. Air sawed in and out as she caught her breath. So much for her zen.

Focus. Who was she kidding? Since the day Trey Fenley moved into her building, her life had become too complicated. And it was messing with her mind.

Amy paced in a circle shaking out her hands. She cracked her neck and looked at her reflection in the store window.

“You are strong. You can do this.”

The woman staring back rolled her eyes–she didn’t look convinced.

Screw it. She shook out her legs and started to run. Pushing Trey and the dinner from her mind, she picked up speed.

Her mind ran through Monday’s to-do list. Go to the impound lot and check on the car. See if she could view the video.

The change of thought worked. By the time the gym came into sight, Amy’s muscles were loose and her mind clear.

Then she walked in. Trey was in the boxing ring… with Tommy. What the hell?

“Hey, what's going on?”

“Hey Am, Trey is showing me some boxing moves. Check it out.” His feet danced back and forth and he threw a jab that was so slow, Amy could have dodged and dropped him with one uppercut to his jaw.

She nodded. “Cool.”

Trey leaned over the ropes. “I saw that look. He’s learning. You want to go a few rounds?”

The twinkle in his eye had her thinking of a different activity, with less punching and more contact.

Bad Amy, bad. “I think I’ll pass. You be careful with Tommy.”

“Yeah, that would make a good first impression for Trey to beat me up then meet Mom.”

“What?” Trey’s brows crinkled.

“Dinner. Tonight. Didn’t Amy tell you?”

“Uh, yeah. My mom invited you to Sunday dinner. If you're busy, I’m sure she will understand.” Please be busy.

“What time?”

Crap.

“Six.” Tommy answered. “This is sweet. I’m bringing a friend, too.”

Amy’s attention shifted to her brother. “Who? Sheila?”

“Nope. I just met her.”

“And you’re bringing her to meet Mom?” Not the brightest idea he’d had. Then again, not the worst either.
