“It’s part of my job. Landlord and all.”

“Right. Thanks again.” She turned to Ryan. “I think I’m good. They only took my computer and some cash I had in the bedroom. Now, it’s a matter of cleaning up. I need to buy a new mattress.”

Trey cleared his throat again.

What’s the deal, does he have a summer cold?

“I ordered you one.”

“Oh.” She wasn’t sure what to say. The man bought her a bed.

“Sounds like Fenley has it all under control.” Ryan didn’t sound too happy about it.

“Well, I better finish my shift and get out of here. See you tomorrow.” She and Trey passed Ryan, then she stopped. “Hey, Daniels. Thanks.”

The smile was genuine. “I’m always here for you.”

She nodded. When did their friendship become awkward?

Her gaze slipped to Trey. She had her answer.

While driving home, Amy’s dashboard flashed an incoming call from her mother.

“Hey, Mom. I was going to call you tonight. How was your Fourth?”

“Better than yours. What’s this I hear; your apartment was broken into?”

Shit, news travels fast. “Yeah, it wasn’t that bad.”

“Amy, don’t lie to your mother. Your brother said it looked like wild animals ravaged the place. Grandpa’s lamp got broken.”

“How did he—”

“He went into work and his boss mentioned it.”

She should have known.

“And what’s this I hear about you and Tommy’s boss are dating?”

“Tommy’s got a big mouth.” Amy mumbled.

But who told him… Trey?

“It wasn’t your brother who told me. I ran into Irene Swenson at the store. She said it was all the talk at her son’s party yesterday.”

“Great.” A tick pounded in Amy’s temple. “Sounds like you’re all caught up on my life. What's new with you?”

“Nothing. But while I have you on the phone, are you coming Sunday for dinner?”

“Yeah, I’ll be there.” Amy pulled up in front of the gym and put the car in park.

“Super, bring your new beau. I can’t wait to meet the other half of Tre-Amy.”

“See you Sunday, Mom.” She ended the call.

Amy dropped her head to the steering wheel and prayed the pounding behind her eyes was a tumor, and she’d have to miss dinner. She wasn’t that lucky.

Before she could get out of her vehicle, her phone rang again. Unknown number flashed. She almost didn’t answer. She didn’t need an extended car warranty. But she tapped the button and Megan Peterson’s voice filled the car.
