“No, I haven’t but you don’t have to worry, he’s de-scented.”
“Good to know.” It had taken a week to get the smell fully out of her hair.
Trey stood there, waiting. Amy couldn’t say for what but his grin brought out the dimple in his cheek. Her heart flipped once. Twice.
Damn that smile. She needed to get some sleep before she did something stupid like invite him into the bed with her. “I’m uh, going to crash.”
She started toward the bedroom but stopped. Turning, she faced him across the room. She wanted to still be pissed. He’d lied and suspected her of corruption, but after the night she had, she couldn’t.
His soft caresses didn’t seem fake, and the way he was there for her tonight… She swallowed the words that would get her in trouble. Even if that trouble would be so sweet.
But she did have one thing to say to him. “Thank you.”
His chin dipped in acknowledgement.
She closed the bedroom door and leaned against it. Unlike her bedroom, his was larger and had an attached bathroom. The size wasn’t what drew her eyes, nor the cool gray tones, but the massive California King four-poster bed snagged her attention.
Wrought iron, modern, and fabulous. She loved it.
She dropped her bag on the club chair in the corner and roamed the room. Her fingers ran over the rich mahogany dresser, sleek metal picture frames. One, an older couple, the woman with a sleek blonde bob and a man that looked like an older, red haired version of Trey. Another had the same couple, his parents, a young Trey at his college graduation.
Attractive family, but the one that made her smile was Trey about ten with a baby wrapped in pink. “Oh, what a cutie.”
She scanned the other photos on the dresser. Friends after a flag football game, Fenley with a pretty brunette, and one more. Trey with a young red-haired graduate—college Barbie.
A knock pulled her from her snooping. “Yes?”
He opened the door. “Hey, Stinky might try—What?”
She covered her scowl and stepped back from the photos. “Nothing.”
He glanced from the dresser to her. “Amy, about Brie—”
She cut him off with a wave of her hand. “It’s late. You were saying about Stinky?”
“Oh, Stinky is used to sleeping on the bed with me, so he might scratch at the door. I didn’t want him to freak you out in the middle of the night.”
“It is the middle of the night.”
He glanced at the clock on the bedside table. “So, it is.”
Trey rocked on his heels. Amy got the impression that he wanted to say something more. The words dangled on the tip of his tongue, but he didn’t. Dang, if she didn’t want him to say them. Not that he needed to, she knew what he was thinking.
She thought it too and it wouldn’t be wise.
“Goodnight.”
He gave her one long look and nodded. “Night.”
With the click of the door, she dropped to the bed. She didn’t take off her makeup or change into her night clothes. Nope, she stared at the exposed ductwork on the ceiling and willed her mind to shut up.
It didn’t.
Who could have done this? Why? Did Trey sleep in the nude?
She had ideas on the first two, but her mind kept circling back to the last. The question she really shouldn’t be thinking about. But she did.
She flung her arm over her eyes and prayed for sleep knowing it wouldn’t come. Tomorrow would be hell, and she couldn’t do anything about it.
