Amy thought about it. If she were a betting woman, she’d bet every dollar stashed in her underwear drawer that Brie was important to him. “We’ll see.”

“Yeah, we will. And speaking of seeing, I think we need a girls night. I’ll come down to the suburbs and check out this agent and his fine abs, then we can go out for some drinks and darts, like in college. Maybe I can talk my sisters into coming along.”

“Sounds good. I’ll text you my schedule.” Candi’s sisters she referred to were her sorority sisters from college. Amy wasn’t in the sorority, but she loved hanging out with the gals. Maybe that’s what she needed, some good old fashion fun with other women. Between work, Tommy, and the old cases monopolizing her time, she hadn’t done anything fun for herself.

And now add Trey Fenley to the mix, and she really needed a break.

Or… she needed to buy a new vibrator. One that would make her forget her new fake boyfriend.

Amy pulled her hoodie low over her face, canvassed left and right to make sure the coast was clear, then sprinted to the treadmill in the back corner. She’d been successfully avoiding Trey, A.K.A. her new fake beau for the last two days. She shoved in her earbuds, drowning out the thunder crashing outside and set her pace to a fast walk to warm up.

She scowled at the rain pelting the floor-to-ceiling front windows. Stupid storm. The meteorologist predicted this weather pattern to hover for at least two days, making running outside a no go.

If Amy put off her workout any longer, she might do something crazy, like pick up yet another night shift. She shivered at the thought. A weekend night shift was never boring, then again, it was more dangerous.

The song switched, and she bumped the speed up to a nice steady jog. A calm she’d been missing for the last two days settled in her joints. Loose and limber, exactly what she needed. Thank God for running or she’d need a stiff shot of whiskey to unwind from this week’s shifts. The last time she downed a glass of JD, words exited her mouth that were best not uttered in front of Trey Fenley.

In the zone, eyes closed, her footfalls in time to the beat playing in her ear. Yup, this was her happy place.

Suddenly, the air shifted next to her. Shit, so much for her calm. She didn’t need to look to know who it was. The hairs on her arm jumped, and her nipples tightened. Only one person had that effect on her—Trey.

She bit back the irritation and pushed on. Ignore him. Easy.

Not so much, but damn if she wouldn’t try.

His machine spooled up to match hers. She snuck a peek out of the corner of her eye. His bronze biceps rippled as he pumped his arm in time to his pace.

Amy squeezed her eyes closed and her foot faltered. Uff. She lost her grip and slipped off the back of the machine, crashing to the floor.

“Are you alright?” Trey hopped off from a fast run with the grace of a gazelle.

Figures. Amy swatted his hand away and rolled to her knees to get up. So much for a smooth recovery.

“Let me get you some ice. You hit your hip pretty hard.”

“I’m fine.” Pride had her gingerly climbing back onto the machine. No way she could go back to the jog. Pain shot through her hip with each step.

“You should take a break.”

She threw her best fuck-off glare his way. He laughed. The asshole.

“Okay, you’re the big, tough cop. I won’t remind you of the number of pain-filled days that could be avoided by proper ice and anti-inflammatories.”

“Smug bastard,” she mumbled.

He laughed again. “Guilty, but you’re just mad because you know I’m right.”

“Fine.” She slammed her fist on the stop button and grabbed the handrails with a little more force than she’d like.

He stood watching her with his hands on his hips. Her gaze trailed down his wide shoulders, across the molded T-shirt that emphasized his sculpted chest all the way down his torso. A faint outline of those glorious abs peeked through. Sweet baby Jesus, the man was built.

His pecs flexed.

Her gaze whipped to the smirk on that handsome face. Asshole.

Disgusted with herself for being caught ogling him, she scowled and snapped. “Well, are you going to get me some ice or do I need to hobble upstairs and get my own?”

Not a bad idea, then she could grab some ice cream from the freezer and eat away her embarrassment. Alone.
