Trey’s brows pulled in. “You guys told your women about the case.”
The two detectives shared a brief look. CJ answered, “Well, yeah. You’ve never been married, have you?”
Trey shook his head. He didn’t get it. He’d had some long-term relationships but never shared details of a case with them.
Jim handed the case file back to Trey. “I don’t tell Liz everything, but Amy’s one of her best friends. Trust me, when it’s the right woman, your gums will be flapping like Buffy at the Clip and Curl.”
“Whatever, guys. I better get back to work.” Trey dropped some bills on the table and rose.
“Fenley.” CJ’s voice stopped him. “Talk to her soon.”
He nodded and left.
Judging by the way her eyes seared him in the restaurant, he might want to wear his Kevlar when he does.
Ten minutes to six. Trey sprayed cleaner on the barbell for the fourth time in the last fifteen minutes. The gym smelled like pine and if he hazarded a guess, the free weights were cleaner than his kitchen sink.
How long of a day did Amy work anyway? He’d been using the excuse of cleaning to keep an eye on the door. He wanted to catch her before she slipped up to her apartment and started Googling him.
His fingers went slack and the rag fell to the floor. Who was he kidding? She most likely searched for him in the police system already. He wanted to explain before she could make up her own opinions on why he hadn’t told her he was in law enforcement.
He dropped his head to his chest. No way she wouldn’t put it together in under thirty seconds.
The door opened. Trey’s head whipped up.
Amy pushed the inner door open with enough force to have it slam against the wall.
Steel blue eyes locked on his.
She knew.
His stomach muscles clenched, and he grit his teeth. Visions of this fiery woman’s approach sparked two things in him. Lust and fear. The first he’d been fighting for weeks. The second was new. He couldn’t say why but her opinion mattered.
She stopped out of his reach. Her hands fisted on her hips, too close to her weapon for his liking.
“Trey.” Her voice was calm. Too calm. Pink lips tipped up in a sardonic smile. “Or should I say Agent Fenley.”
He glanced around. No one was listening, but he didn’t want to take a chance. If the plan he concocted after lunch would work, he needed her full cooperation and that included secrecy. “Let’s take this into my office.” He didn’t need to look back to know she followed him.
The contents of his cluttered utilitarian office faded away when the door closed. The faint smell of sweat touched his nose. He wasn't sure if it came from her or him.
He schooled his expression and turned to find her closer than he liked. If he reached out, he could stroke his fingers down her cheeks. They held a pink flush.
Internally, he snorted. Yeah, and get a broken hand in the process.
Don’t step back. He needed a tiny bit of space to think. “Please close the door.”
When she stepped back to grab the door handle, the breath stuck in Trey’s lungs whooshed out.
Her head whipped around at the sound.
Damn, the pink flush was a deep rose now. Anger, no doubt, but he couldn't help but wonder how deep the color could go. He could think of a couple ways to find out, but now was not the time for either. Trey needed her cooperation not her anger, and the other... Well, not until he knew if she was corrupt or not. He would do a lot of things for the job, but he wouldn't romance the truth out of someone. Not even Amy.
He cleared his throat. "I couldn't tell you."
She cocked her head, and her eyes turned to slits. "Would you have?" When he didn't respond, she continued. "I'm not stupid. I know you’re working the Finden case. No way the guy had a coronary in holding. The odds of that are a million to one. Not to mention they didn’t release the toxicology report in the case."
She was quick, no doubt.
