“That’s not what I heard.” He didn’t need to be a trained observer to see she was lying.
She waved a hand to dispel the statement. “I’m fine. I want to get to the station. Have they interviewed Peterson yet?”
“Whoa, slow it down. You just got here.” He inched closer, taking in the bruises on her face and arms. Both offensive and defensive wounds. His tough Amy… but was she his?
She pulled at the tape on the IV. “They’re taking too long. I have things to do.”
He could guess what those things were. Interrogate Peterson. Not that she’d be getting close to him if Trey had anything to do with it. “Hold up. You need to rest.”
“Screw rest. I can rest when we know who facilitated the contract between Bob and Stephen.” She grabbed her pants from the closet.
“Wait.” His hands gripped her shoulders, steadied her. Determination coursed through her. No way he’d keep her in that bed. Well, one way, if he was lucky. He sighed. Not the time. “You can observe, but then I’m bringing you back to get checked out. Deal?”
He could almost hear her brain ticking through her options.
“Okay.”
A smile struggled to break free at her surrender. He bit it back. “And Amy, we need to talk.”
Her gaze dropped. She studied the buttons on his shirt before her eyes rose to meet his. “Yes, but after.”
The ball of tension in his chest eased just a bit. They would talk. God, he hoped that was a good thing. At the moment, the aversion of her gaze had that ball recoiling.
Her eyes darted to the closet.
The corner of his lip tugged up. “Get dressed. I’ll drive.”
A solemn mood dimmed the hum of the station that overflowed with officers. Everyone from the top brass to the newest proby filled the space. Amy elbowed her way to her desk. Trey followed. She pulled up the interview room schedule.
“CJ has room two reserved. Come on.” She locked her system and pushed past him.
He snagged her arm. “Relax. They haven’t started yet.”
“How do you know?”
“CJ texted me when he set it up. I’m doing the interview with him.” At her scowl, he dropped his hand. “You can watch in the observation room with Swenson and Daniels.”
Trey disappeared into the room.
“Of course, the BCA agent gets to interview Peterson,” she muttered as she moved down the hall to the next door. “I’m the one he tried to kill.”
Okay, she was being unrealistic. No way the victim would get to interview the perpetrator. Especially when the Chief had detectives and the BCA working the case. But still, she was the one whose ass was waving in the wind with a big red bullseye on it. And she wanted answers. Amy fumed as she unlatched the door.
Whoa. The observation room wasn’t big, but the eight by ten room was overflowing. It was badges from wall to wall—hers was the bottom of the chain of command.
“Officer Larson, I’m glad to see you’re up and moving, but I didn’t expect you to be in the station today. You should go home and rest.” Chief Martin shook her hand.
She covered a wince, but obviously she didn’t hide it well enough.
“Or maybe, you should still be in the hospital?”
“I’m good, sir. Thanks.”
She turned to Ryan and Jim. “Did I miss anything?”
“No, CJ just started the recording and opened the interview.” Jim shoved his fists in his pockets.
Amy saw the bruise blooming on Peterson’s cheek and flexed her hand. She smiled. Got a good one in.
