“I did, then Tommy called and I got back in the car.”

“I’m glad you’re here. Hand me my clothes, would you?” Amy pointed to the closet across the room.

“What’s the rush, Sunday Mass?”

“Haha, seriously, help me or I’ll pull this needle out of my arm and get them myself.”

Candi didn’t move, just propped her fist on her hip. “By the looks of you, I don’t think you’re ready to be discharged.”

Amy gave Candi her most intimidating cop-stare.

Candi threw one right back at her.

Amy squinted and hardened her face but her friend’s stone-cold expression sent a chill down her spine. “Damn it. You always did have a better cop-stare than I did.”

“I also kicked your butt in hand-to-hand combat, not that it would take much to do that at the moment, so get back in that bed, and I’ll call the doc for you.”

“Fine.” Amy huffed and crossed her arms. She tried to cover the flinch of pain as she adjusted the pillows.

“Where’s your sexy neighbor?” Candi hit the call button as she took a seat next to the bed.

The weight of that question had Amy’s head dropped back. “Not here.”

The only sound in the room was the beep of the machine and her own breathing. Candi was so still, Amy questioned if she even heard her.

She snuck a look from the corner of her eye. Damn, she had and was waiting. “I lied. Well, not a lie.”

Her friend’s perfectly arched brow rose.

“I removed my father’s reprimand from the file.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know. I thought he wouldn’t help if he thought Dad was corrupt. I know he couldn’t be, but I didn’t trust Trey to see it my way. Not knowing what he’d been through with his partner.”

Candi nodded. “And you didn’t realize that the man could have some trust issues after being shot?”

“I know, but at the time, I didn’t think we’d…” The words wouldn’t form on her lips. They couldn’t.

“You didn’t think you’d be in a relationship with him?”

Amy winced. “Don’t say that. We weren’t in one of those.”

Candi crossed her arms over her chest and shook her head. “You can’t even say the word. Relationship.”

“Stop. I can too, but we weren’t. I know better. Cops aren’t a good bet.”

“Bullshit.”

Amy’s gaze shot to her friend. “You know the statistics as well as I do.”

“They’re just numbers. Plenty of couples beat the odds. You were happy with him. And I saw the way that man look at you. It was a relationship.” She leaned in and annunciated the last word as if talking to a three-year-old.

Damn it, she was right. But she blew that—she gulped—relationship to hell. “Well, he didn’t look at me that way when he left here yesterday.”

“Knowing his background, I can believe it. So, do you want him to?”

An ache burned deep in her gut. No other man made her want to fight for him, with him. Yes, she wanted his forgiveness and a whole lot more.
